Our alumni community joined “The opening ceremony of the Alumni Commons and A Feast of Togetherness – Poon Choi Party.” on January 17, 2026 (Saturday) on the Clear Water Bay campus at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The event was co-organized with the HKUST Alumni Association and the HKUST Convocation.

The HKUST Alumni Commons is the first dedicated on-campus space where alumni can renew friendships, spark new ideas, and foster lasting bonds across generations. With more than 100,000 alumni worldwide, this dedicated location is set to become an iconic presence on campus.

The ceremony drew an enthusiastic gathering of alumni. Many were accompanied by their families, alongside students, faculty, colleagues, and friends. The distinguished officiating guests included President Prof. Nancy IP, HKUST Council Members, HKUST Foundation Board Members, the Chairman of the HKUST Convocation, the President of the HKUST Alumni Association, the Vice-President for Institutional Advancement Prof. Charles NG, and other senior management members.

To express their best wishes for the University’s future, the participants wrote blessing cards and placed them inside a specially designed installation that celebrated HKUST’s 35th anniversary. This collective gesture created a memorable expression of hope.

President Prof. Nancy IP and Vice-President for Institutional Advancement Prof. Charles NG shared their hopes for HKUST’s future with attendees at the Alumni Common opening ceremony.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests explored the well-equipped indoor spaces of Alumni Commons for mingling and interacted with the playful claw machines for winning HKUST souvenirs. The outdoor area, adorned with a signature wall and engaging photo spots, enhanced the lively atmosphere. A highlight was the Galleria of Alumni Legacy, where commemorative plaques recognize generous donors for their enduring support for the Alumni Endowment Fund.

Commemorative plaques in the Galleria of Alumni Legacy pay lasting tribute to donors who generously support the Alumni Endowment Fund.

The celebrations continued into the evening with “A Feast of Togetherness – Poon Choi Party” at the S. H. Ho Sports Hall. Those in attendance gathered around this traditional Cantonese dish, which symbolizes abundance, unity, and family reunions, to share laughter and renew connections with the HKUST community.

Alumni enthusiastically joined the Poon Choi party with their loved ones, infusing campus with a festive energy.

Talented student Sian LEE and alumni Paul AU and Xavier YAM captivated the audience with their vocal performances.

Heartfelt thanks go to all our donors and sponsors whose support made this memorable celebration possible. Gratitude, inspiration, and the unbreakable bonds that define the HKUST family filled the entire celebration.
