Opening of Tsang Shiu Tim Sports Center Promotes Holistic Education

2019-02-25

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) celebrated the opening of a brand new Tsang Shiu Tim Sports Center (“Center”), named after Tsang Shiu Tim Charitable Foundation (Foundation) for a HK$30 million donation that aims to promote holistic education at HKUST.

Mr. TSANG Kai-Ching, representative of the Tsang Shiu Tim Charitable Foundation, said in the Center’s opening ceremony that he hoped HKUST could build an even stronger sports culture to unleash innovation spirit, “A decade ago, the Tsang Shiu Tim family supported HKUST and named its arts hall. I am proud to see that now we are able to contribute to both aesthetic and athletic life of the community at HKUST.  The modern age demands students with a healthy mind in a healthy body. I hope we could help nurture sportsmanship in HKUST, and make it a complete university of excellence.”

HKUST President Prof. Wei SHYY expressed gratitude to the Foundation’s generosity, “To promote sportsmanship and student diversity, HKUST recently introduced new scholarship and admission requirements for student athletes.  The new sports hall comes at the perfect moment and I hope this new infrastructure would not only satisfy the training need of our athletes, but will also promote a healthy lifestyle and holistic education for our HKUST community.”

The three-story Center is not only in close proximity to the student halls, two swimming pools and an athletic field with an all-weather turf, but its waterfront location also creates an inviting environment that encourages students to participate in physical activities.  The Center contains a main arena equivalent to a standard basketball court, a multipurpose room that accommodates six table tennis tables, as well as two sea-view areas installed with gym facilities.

The Center also incorporates multiple eco-friendly features, such as a glazed exterior to lower heat gain and energy consumption, a rooftop fitted with highly-reflective material to minimize urban heat island effect, solar tube water heating system as well as motion sensor lighting to minimize use of electricity.

Tsang Shiu Tim Charitable Foundation has begun its partnership with HKUST since 2008 – when it first donated HK$20 million to the University, an art hall was named after the Foundation in recognition of its generosity.  Tsang Shiu Tim Arts Hall is a major venue for exhibitions, performances and workshops at HKUST.
