HKUST Sponsored by Ernst & Young to Establish the Institute for Emerging Market Studies and Host Forum on 'Prospects for Emerging Markets in the Global Economy'
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a generous sponsorship from Ernst & Young for the establishment of the Institute for Emerging Market Studies (IEMS), which seeks to provide thought leadership on issues facing businesses and policy makers in emerging markets. The launch event and opening forum of IEMS titled 'Prospects for Emerging Markets in the Global Economy' featured world-renowned experts and academics giving insights into the complex concerns of emerging market economies as they seek to maintain economic dynamism in a changing global environment.

HKUST Joins World's Leading Institutions under edX's X University Consortium to foster online learning
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is pleased to join the X University Consortium of edX (xConsortium), the not-for-profit online learning initiative comprised of leading global institutions founded by Harvard University and MIT. The University is one of the first Asian institutions to join the xConsortium to deliver the next generation of online and blended courses. HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan said, "We at HKUST are delighted to join the xConsortium, the international online learning enterprise to provide world-class courses and a superior educational experience to anyone who is eager to learn. Further to our partnership with Coursera's online education platform last year as one of its first Asian partners, we are once again demonstrating our commitment to contributing to the global development of online learning as an international research university dedicated to excellence in education and research."

HKUST and University of Toronto Sign Agreement for Academic Cooperation
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of Toronto (U of T) have reached an agreement for academic and research cooperation, working towards a joint venture in PhD education which allows students to conduct academic exchange at both universities. Under this agreement, both universities are committed to developing joint activities and programs for academic, scientific and technological exchange and cooperation in the broad fields of science and engineering. It is envisaged that both parties would start the realization of collaborative PhD education within the coming few years.

HKUST President Pleads for Global Cooperation in Science & Technology and Higher Education at World Economic Forum Annual Meeting
President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Prof Tony F Chan was invited to participate in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2013 in Davos, Switzerland, where he engaged in vibrant discussions with community leaders and global business leaders, as well as presidents from world-class universities on global science and technology outlook and emerging trends in higher education.

Oxford and HKUST Sign MoU in Davos on Establishing a Leadership and Public Policy Series
On 25 January 2013 in Davos, Switzerland, University of Oxford Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Hamilton and Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) President Professor Tony Chan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for International Collaboration. Under this collaboration, both sides agree to jointly establish the Oxford-HKUST Leadership and Public Policy Series, which aims to provide executive education short courses to public sector officials from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and eventually Asia.

HKUST Presents Third Season of Internationally-Acclaimed Exploration Creativity
Hailed by the Financial Times as "the city's most innovative music experience," The Intimacy of Creativity, the first-of-its kind in Hong Kong, is a two-week Partnership devoted to an intimate dialogue between composers and performers presented by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). It returns to Hong Kong 22 April to 5 May, 2013. Based on an idea that is at once new and old, world-renowned composers and performers, and assorted emerging composers come together to exchange musical ideas in depth, for the purpose of improving their compositions, or their performance practice or their musical interpretations. This will be done over the course of two weeks in Open Discussions. Audiences will be ringside to witness the birth of new music and hear the final results for themselves at the World Premiere Concerts at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre on 28 April and 5 May, 2013.

HKUST Makes Great Strides in Internationalization with Non-local Student Recruitment
The percentage of non-local undergraduate students in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) jumped from 18% last year to 20%, reaching the cap set by the Government on non-local admissions. In addition, at 55% of this year’s non-local undergraduate intake, the percentage of international students admitted to HKUST is the highest among local higher institutions.
