HKUST-trained Young Physicists Achieve Best Ever Results in Asian Physics Olympiad 2012
The Hong Kong team of the 13th Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) trained by the Department of Physics of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) achieved the best results ever in the competition, amassing 1 gold, 2 bronze medals and 3 honorable mentions. Amongst the brilliant contestants is gold medalist Lam Ho-tat, who achieved fourth place in Asia amongst competitors in APhO.

HKUST Reaps Three Awards for Research Excellence in Natural Sciences presented by the Ministry of Education
Three notable scientific research projects at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have won the Awards for Research Excellence in Natural Sciences presented by the Ministry of Education. Prof Joseph Hun-wei Lee, Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies offered his hearty congratulations to five HKUST awardees. He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to achieving breakthroughs in a wide array of pursuits, in fulfillment of its mission to advance learning and knowledge through teaching and research, as well as spurring Hong Kong’s socioeconomic development. The Awards received by HKUST scholars not only demonstrate the University’s strength in research, but also encourage local researchers and Mainland scientists to join hands in solving central issues and drive greater participation of our young generation in scientific research.

HKUST Up 30 Places in Global Reputation Rankings in One Year
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is pleased with Times Higher Education's 2012 World Reputation Rankings, placing it between 61 and 70 in the world, up significantly from 91 and 100 last year. HKUST's rise in ranking underlines the University's dedicated pursuit of excellence in teaching and research. It is a welcome recognition of the University's successful efforts at internationalization, widening students' horizons and recruiting global talents to elevate its quality of teaching and research. The University does not pursue rankings per se, but they are helpful in reviewing our progress and an encouragement to further improvements. More importantly, we hope that our continued pursuit of excellence in education and research will translate into social and economic development for our community. HKUST the big winner among Institutions in Hong Kong in China's State Science and Technology Awards
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) reaped five of the most prestigious awards in science and technology in China – the State Science and Technology Awards (SSTAs) bestowed by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. The University, with the largest number of awards among tertiary institutions in Hong Kong in 2011, won four second-class State Natural Science Awards (SNSA) and one second-class State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (SSTPA) of the year.

HKUST Professor Honored by World's Leading Authority on Computational Linguistics
Prof Dekai Wu, a computational linguistics and musicology researcher in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Human Language Technology Center at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been selected as one of the world's top researchers in the artificial intelligence and cognitive science fields of natural language processing, language engineering, and human language technology. Prof Wu was honored among the first 17 Founding Fellows of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). The ACL is the world's largest, oldest and most prestigious international professional organization for research on making machines smart enough to learn and understand human languages, which drives the technology of leading edge companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo, Facebook or IBM.

Six HKUST Professors Elected Prestigious IEEE Fellows The Highest Share in Asia for 2012
Six professors from the School of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were recently elected 2012 Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), bringing the total number of IEEE Fellows at HKUST to 25 which is equivalent to 29% of the total number of IEEE fellows in Hong Kong. HKUST will have the highest number of newly elevated IEEE Fellows among universities and institutions in Asia.
