HKUST Honors Teaching Innovators
Five Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) professors and their teaching teams were honored today(11 December) with Teaching Innovation Awards for successfully introducing new ideas, techniques and practices in teaching. HKUST President, Prof Paul Chu, presented the awards at the third Teaching and Learning Symposium, a biennial event to promote novel teaching and learning at the University. The five winners are:

HKUST Celebrates World Top Ranking for Kellogg-HKUST EMBA Program
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR Government, the Honorable Donald Tsang, along with other top officials and prominent community leaders, today joined the HKUST to celebrate the world No.1 ranking for the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program.The Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA Program is a partnership between the HKUST Business School and the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Established a decade ago and well recognized ever since, the program ranks No.1 in the world in this year's Financial Times EMBA global rankings. This is the first time a Hong Kong-based program has topped an international rankings chart.

HKUST Hosts the first International Conference on Information and Learning Commons in Hong Kong
International library and learning support experts from more than 10 countries attended an International Conference on Information and Learning Commons hosted by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the first of its kind in the territory.The 2-day Conference, started today (Monday 10 December) at HKUST’s Lee Wing Tat Lecture Theatre, was held to mark the anniversary of launching Information Commons by HKUST’s Lee Shau Kee Library.Integrating reference services and technical support, the Information Commons aims to foster continued learning outside the classroom. It provides students and faculty with a creative, flexible, technology-rich environment to use electronic information resources effectively, to experiment with new information technology, and to enhance collaborative learning and group presentations. Library users, especially students, have responded enthusiastically to the service since its introduction last fall.

HKUST Students Win Job Offers with Business Proposals
Four HKUST students on the first Schmidt-HKUST Apprentice Program (the Program) each walked away with a HK$10,000 scholarship and a possible job offer for the business proposal presented today on the application of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology on the hotel industry. The winners are Chan Kwun-Yin Chris, Chin Jun-Xing Jack, Lee Lap-Tak Anthony and Lai Pak-Wa Shera, second and third year students of HKUST’s Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management. They were among the 12 students on the Program jointly organized by HKUST and Schmidt & Co (HK) Ltd. (Schmidt) At a ceremony to mark the conclusion of the Program today (Monday 10 December), the students presented their business proposals in teams of four on RFID’s application on respectively the hotel, jewellery and theme park industries. Winners of Schmidt’s employment contracts were also announced at the ceremony.

North Korea Team Receives HKUST Training
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, or North Korea) has for the first time sent a team of research specialists to Hong Kong to receive a one-month training in survey research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Funded by the United Nations, this training program is the first organized training program of this kind for DPRK. The objective is to strengthen survey research capabilities of DPRK Statistics Office, which is planning for the first modern population and housing census to be held in 2008. This training program is a part of an overall effort to improve DPRK’s statistical system. “We feel that it is a distinct honor for our Research Center and also for HKUST to have been chosen by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to provide such training at this critical time for DPRK to enhance their development efforts,” said Prof John Ma, Director of HKUST’s Center for Spatial and Social Demographics.

The Co-organized Conference on Higher Education Administration at HKUST (Chinese)
香港十一所高等院校聯同中聯辦教育科技部於十一月二十六日至三十日舉辦「甘肅青海高校校級領導及高級行政人員高校管理研討會」,目的是促進香港與甘肅和青海兩省高校的交流協作。研討會的總結會今日於香港科技大學舉行,由香港中文大學副校長鄭振耀教授主持。 是次為香港高校首次攜手合作為內地高校舉辦研討會,獲得國家教育部和香港特區政府教育局支持。 研討會的主題為香港高等教育發展及高校管理。研討會開幕儀式於十一月二十六日在香港浸會大學舉行,由該校副校長陸大章教授等主禮,其後一連五天輪流在十所高校舉行。 來自甘肅和青海兩省教育廳的官員及兩省十二所高校的校級領導及高級行政人員共二十六人參加了研討會,就高校管治、人力資源管理、課程質量評審、全人教育、學生管理和國際化等課題與本港高校同行討論和交流,並參觀了多所高校的不同設施。 研討會籌委會主席香港理工大學境外中心拓展處處長羅璇女士表示,參與籌辦是次研討會的香港高校希望結合大家的力量為內地高校舉辦研討會,為國家的教育事業出一分力。與會者均表示是次來港參加研討會的機會難能可貴,獲益良多。 籌辦是次研討會的香港高校包括港大、中大、公大、城大、科大、浸大、教院、理大、演藝、樹仁和嶺大。   傳媒查詢: 陸錦榮 電話:2358 6306 電郵:kluk@ust.hk

HKUST and Tsinghua University establish "Lau Fu Wing Engineering Education Exchange Fund" (Chinese)
劉富榮教授教育基金、清華大學及香港科技大學三方於今天(2007年11月20日),在科大簽署設立「劉富榮教授工程教育交流基金」協議書,加強香港和內地工程教育的交流,進一步提升工程人才的質量。 劉富榮教授教育基金創辦人劉富榮教授、清華大學教育基金會理事長賀美英教授、科大工學院院長陳正豪教授及科大土木工程系系主任張慕聖教授等出席了簽約儀式。 劉富榮教授亦是昭興建築運輸有限公司董事總經理。最近,他捐資500萬元人民幣,設立「劉富榮教授工程教育交流基金」,加強香港和內地工程教育的交流。基金所支持的項目,將以土木工程專業為主,並優先為清華大學與香港科技大學的教授和學生開展交流及研討互訪等活動。 劉富榮教授向來大力支持教育。他是科大及理大的兼任教授。在科大,他於2006年捐資500萬港元,設立「劉富榮助學金」,協助本地與內地有經濟需要的土木工程學系學生。最近,他更捐助清華設立工程結構實驗室,作為國家教育部的重點實驗室。 劉教授表示:「國家的發展需要一流的工程人才,我希望可以盡點綿力,透過交流基金,進一步提高人才培養質量。」 賀美英教授及陳正豪教授表達對劉教授的感謝。他們不約而同表示,「清華和科大一直保持友好關係,今次得到劉教授支持成立交流基金,兩所院校日後合作機會必定更多。」 傳媒查詢: 陸錦榮 電話:2358 6306 電郵:kluk@ust.hk
