The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Shanghai Industrial Investment (Holdings) Co., Ltd. (SIIC) together announced the establishment of the Hong Kong Biotechnology Fund (HKBF) today, underscoring a significant milestone dedicated to fostering innovation in the life sciences sector.

3月12日下午，中央港澳工作辦公室主任、國務院港澳事務辦公室主任夏寶龍在北京會見香港科技大學（科大）校董會主席沈向洋、校長葉玉如一行。中央港澳工作辦公室、國務院港澳事務辦公室室務會成員向斌参加會見。 夏寶龍主任表示，香港科技大學成立30多年來，堅持立德樹人根本任務，上下團結一心，勇於開拓創新，主動攻堅克難，在培養優秀專業人才、推動產學研協同創新、深化兩地交流合作等方面取得了優異成績。夏主任指出，希望科大大力弘揚愛國愛港光榮傳統，堅定支持行政長官和特區政府依法施政，積極參與北部都會區建設，助力香港高等教育發展不斷創造新輝煌。他表示，高等教育是香港的「金字招牌」，包括香港科技大學在內的香港高校肩負著服務強國建設和民族復興的歷史使命，要充分發揮「一國兩制」制度優勢，主動對接國家發展戰略，積極融入粵港澳大灣區建設，強化教育對科技和人才的支撐作用，著力打造國際高端人才集聚高地，在推動香港由治及興、推進中國式現代化進程中貢獻更大力量。 沈向洋主席感謝夏主任對科大的關心和指導，表示科大將全力以赴落實夏主任的期望和要求。他說：「科大上下團結一心，將充分發揮香港在『一國兩制』制度下『背靠祖國、聯通世界』的優勢，肩負起時代賦予的使命與責任，培養更多具有家國情懷、國際視野和創新精神的優秀人才，成為國家高素質創新型人才的蓄水池，同時在科技創新、產業轉型升級和社會服務等領域發揮更大的作用，為國家和香港發展作出更大貢獻。」 葉玉如校長亦感謝夏主任對科大辦學成就的肯定和支持。她表示：「科大自創校以來以服務國家為使命，不斷開拓創新人才培養模式，吸引匯聚全球優秀人才，打造兼具國際視野和創新能力的學術高地。未來，科大會更積極融入國家發展戰略，拓展辦學布局，推動包括醫學院等重點項目建設，支持北部都會區發展和粵港澳大灣區建設，通過高水平人才培養、前沿技術突破以及卓越成果轉化，為國家和香港發展貢獻所長。」

國家教育部副部長吳岩博士前日率團到訪香港科技大學(科大)，與科大管理層、教研人員以及學生代表深入交流，了解大學最新的教研創新工作與成果，尤其在生物醫藥、人工智能和醫療科技等前沿領域的突破性成果。吳岩博士讚揚科大取得的卓越辦學成就，並對大學在醫學科技和教育創新領域的貢獻予以肯定，表示期待科大在這些領域繼續發揮優勢，作出更大貢獻。    是次代表團由國家教育部，中央港澳辦、國務院港澳事務辦公室代表組成，成員還包括中央港澳辦、國務院港澳事務辦公室四局副局長陳偉博士，國家教育部港澳台辦主任、國際司司長楊丹博士，國家教育部高等教育司司長周天華博士等。香港特別行政區政府教育局局長蔡若蓮博士、中央人民政府駐香港特別行政區聯絡辦公室教育科技部部長王偉明教授等香港教育局、中聯辦代表參加訪問。   訪問期間，科大校董會主席沈向洋教授和校長葉玉如教授為代表團成員介紹了科大在人才培養、科研創新、成果轉化等領域取得的卓越成績，並分享了科大積極融入國家發展大局的實踐，包括深度參與粵港澳大灣區建設，成立了科大（廣州）；把握長三角一體化發展機遇，設立上海產教融合中心；以及在醫學和科技深度融合發展、醫學健康教育領域開展創新探索。     其後，代表團到訪參觀科大的分子神經科學國家重點實驗室和先進顯示與光電子技術國家重點實驗室，由科大教授及學生代表介紹和展示多個生物醫藥及大健康領域的前沿項目。當中包括可精準檢測阿爾茲海默症和輕度認知障礙的血液測試、基於人工智能算法的智能居家健康評估和慢病管理系統、全球首個獲美國食品藥物管理局許可的非接觸式健康檢測手機應用程式、全球首個三維仿生眼及用於監測人體代謝狀態的電子鼻、可協助醫生實時判斷肺癌細胞切除準確範圍的創新人工智能細胞成像技術、以及全球最小的內窺手術機器人等。科大首席副校長郭毅可教授亦向代表團介紹了大學在人工智能領域的突破性研究，包括具中國視角及香港特色的人工智能生態系統，以及多款自主研發、可應用到醫療影像分析與診斷等方面的大模型。科大在數據科學與人工智能領域位居世界前列，有關課程在《QS 世界大學學科排名2024》榮獲全港第一、並列全球前十強，同時大學著力建設相關基礎設施，擁有領先亞洲高校的人工智能運算能力。   

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) celebrates the opening of the HKUST Shanghai Center today at the Shanghai AI Tower in the West Bund of the Xuhui District in collaboration with the District’s Government, and the Caohejing Hi-Tech Park Development Corporation. Leveraging its strengths in chips, artificial intelligence and biomedicine, the Center is set to enhance collaboration on innovation and entrepreneurship between Hong Kong and Shanghai.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today the launch of its Low Altitude Economy Research Center (LAERC), a strategic initiative designated to bolster national and HKSAR government’s development plans for the Low Altitude Economy (LAE). Emphasizing highly interdisciplinary approach, the Center integrates expertise in artificial intelligence, engineering, and business to foster the development of a LAE ecosystem, with a vision to translate research into pioneering applications through public-private-academic collaboration. Recently, the LAERC submitted a proposal for building LAE sandbox to the HKSAR government and is ready to collaborate with strategic industry partners on innovative trial tests within this framework.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft Research Asia to enhance collaboration in medical health education and research. Focusing on three strategic areas – nurturing talent, revolutionizing smart healthcare, and developing enabling research – the MoU strives to drive the future collaboration of medical education through a holistic approach. 

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) warmly welcomed a delegation from the University Grants Committee (UGC) on January 9, 2025. The visit sparked lively discussions among UGC members, HKUST’s senior management, faculty, and students, highlighting the university’s commitment to creating a dynamic learning environment. During their tour, the delegation explored various innovative teaching facilities on campus, gaining insights into HKUST’s latest achievements and aspirations for advancing academic innovation and nurturing future talent. 

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has welcomed nearly 100 accomplished scholars from a dozen countries and jurisdictions since the launch of its global recruitment campaign in October 2022, boosting the University’s efforts in teaching, research and innovation across different strategic areas. Echoing the government’s talent attraction initiatives as announced in Chief Executive John Lee’s maiden Policy Address back in 2022, Prof Nancy IP, who assumed the role of HKUST President in tandem, implemented several recruitment measures, including the '30 for 30' talent acquisition campaign to hire renowned academics in strategic research areas.
