The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a HK$3 million donation from Tin Ka Ping Foundation (the Foundation) for the University’s work in gifted education. The donation will be used for enhancing peer and family support for young gifted learners, so these children could unleash their potential in a well-supported environment. The HK$3 million is part of a generous gift of the Foundation to nine local higher education institutes in celebration of Dr Tin Ka Ping’s 100th birthday. HKUST is pleased to be the first to kick-off the celebration with the Foundation. Its Board Chairman Mr Sam Tin Hing Sin, Deputy Chairman Mr Tai Hay Lap and Director Mr Tin Wing Sin officiated the ceremony today with the University’s President Prof Tony F Chan, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement Dr Sabrina Lin, Director of The Center for the Development of the Gifted and Talented (CDGT) Prof King L Chow and other members of senior management.

The Institute for the Environment of HKUST reached a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with institutes of universities in Guangzhou, Macao, and Taiwan on 15 August 2017 to prioritize research cooperation in air quality and climate change.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a donation from Equal Opportunities Foundation for the establishment of Student Innovation for Global Health Technology (SIGHT) Scholar Scheme, which enables undergraduates to work on their self-proposed healthcare projects in full time internship locally or overseas.  Two teams consisted of six students were awarded this year.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a donation from Kingworld Medicines Group in support of the University’s Center for Chinese Medicine R&D and student exchange activities of the School of Business and Management. In recognition of the Group’s generosity and support, HKUST named a tiered classroom of the Lee Shau Kee Business Building after the company.  A ceremony was held earlier on the campus today. Officiating guests included Mr Zhao Li Sheng, Co-founder and Chairman of Kingworld Medicines Group, HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan and other senior management.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) celebrated on 5 November, 2016 the opening of the Academy for Bright Future Young Engineers, where engineering students at HKUST will be given the opportunities to mentor and engage secondary school students in various engineering workshops, to spark their interests in technology and instill in them an engineering frame of mind.

If you think the hovering displays in the Iron Man movies are just science fiction, it’s time to think again. Augmented reality (AR) is the next big thing for mobile devices, and HKUST’s System and Media Lab (SysMLab) is at the forefront of its development. SysMLab researchers, led by director Prof Pan Hui, are building a platform for programmers to develop AR apps for mobile and wearable devices. Since the lab’s inception in January 2013, the focus has been on addressing problems in daily life by providing personalized information in the virtual world. Taking a bottom-up approach, Prof Hui explained, “we sought to identify and develop major AR components including hardware platforms, software frameworks and display devices.” The team then used technologies such as object tracking and computation offloading to significantly accelerate the development cycle from three months to only one week.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a HK$2 million donation from Mr Yeung Wing Yee for the establishment of an entrepreneurship fund to support the startups at their early stage initiated by HKUST students.
