HKUST Presents Long Service Awards 2016
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its annual Long Service Award Presentation Ceremony to honor faculty and staff members who have served the University for 20 years. HKUST established the Long Service Award to express appreciation and recognition to long-serving faculty and staff members whose dedication and hard work have contributed to the University’s rapid rise over the past 25 years. This year, HKUST presented awards to 89 colleagues with 20 years of service at the University. HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan, together with the vice-presidents, deans, heads and directors of departments and offices joined the presentation ceremony. The awardees’ families and friends were also invited by the University to attend the event and share the happiness at the celebration.

HKUST Holds Opening Ceremony for Cheng Yu Tung Building
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held an opening ceremony today for the Cheng Yu Tung Building, marking a milestone in the University’s development and its future education and research. The generous donation from Cheng Yu Tung Foundation has helped the University to complete the funding for the new research and academic complex with state-of-the-art facilities. In honor of this generosity, the University has named the new complex Cheng Yu Tung Building. The building will help HKUST to pursue its goal in advancing innovation and excellence, with its first-class facilities on a par with the highest international standards and in line with the world’stop research universities including Oxford, Cambridge and Caltech.

Turing Prize Winner Prof Andrew Chi-Chih Yao Explores Development of Quantum Computing at HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series on 28 January, featuring Prof Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, the only Chinese Turing Prize winner. In his talk titled “Quantum Computing: A Great Science in the Making”, Prof Yao told the audience the secrets in the atoms that could potentially unleash the enormous power of quantum computing. He also delved into the advantages of quantum computing and shared his insights into how it will revolutionize information processing. “Quantum computer comes at a fortuitous time when the Moore’s law for computing is starting to reach its physical limit imposed by quantum mechanics. The design of quantum computer offers a daring approach: to take advantage of the quantum problem instead of fighting it,” he said.

Dr Li Dak Sum Donates HK$300 Million to Three Universities to Establish Scholarships for Young Talents
The University of Hong Kong (HKU), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a HK$300 million donation from Dr Li Dak Sum for the establishment of scholarship schemes to nurture young talents. An endowment fund, namely Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Kenneth Li Education Fund, will be set up by the three universities respectively with the HK$100 million donation each to award scholarships to local undergraduates who graduated from Ning Po College and Ning Po No.2 College and are outstanding in both academic performance and personal conduct, and with financial need.

Founder and Design Director of Brainchild Design Group and Brainchild Design Consultants Mr Pinky Lai Speaks on What it takes to be a Top Car Designer at HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series on 7 December, featuring Mr Pinky Lai, Founder and Design Director of Brainchild Design Group and Brainchild Design Consultants, and former Chief Designer for exterior designs of various models of Porsche including 911, Cayman and Boxster. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST. In his talk, titled “Journey and Destinations: Design and Beyond”, Mr Lai spoke on how he embarked his lifelong career as a car designer. “When I flew to Rome with a one-way ticket in 1972, I had little idea about what I was going after. To reach where I am today, I have had to unconditionally pursue my professional goals, always seeking the best way to achieve success without compromise,” he said.

HKUST Holds 23rd Congregation Conferring Honorary Doctorates on Five Distinguished Academics and Community Leaders
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its 23rd Congregation today (20 November) and conferred honorary doctorates on five eminent academics and community leaders.  The Honourable Andrew Liao Cheung-sing, Chairman of the University Council, presided over today’s ceremony. HKUST honorary doctorates are awarded to five outstanding individuals in recognition of their distinguished achievements and contributions.  This year’s recipients were (in alphabetical order): Mr Hans Michael JEBSEN, BBS, Chairman of the Jebsen Group - Doctor of Business Administration honoris causa Prof Sir John PENDRY, FRS, Chair Professor in Theoretical Solid State Physics at Imperial College - Doctor of Science honoris causa Dr Raghuram G RAJAN, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India - Doctor of Business Administration honoris causa
