Hightower Chair in Materials Science and Engineering and Regents' Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology Prof Zhong Lin Wang Speaks on Nanogenerators for Self-powered Systems and Piezotronics for Smart Devices at HKUST 25th Anniversary
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series yesterday, featuring Prof Zhong Lin Wang, Hightower Chair in Materials Science and Engineering and Regents’ Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, and Chief Scientist and Director at Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST.
Speaking on “Nanogenerators for Self-powered Systems and Piezotronics for Smart Devices”, Prof Wang reflected on how he began his research, he said, "Everything made by human was driven by electricity. And I asked myself: can we use human mechano-sensation to drive power of electronic devices instead? Can we control electronics by imagination? I see a possibility."

Nobel Laureate Professor Dan Shechtman Speaks on How Technological Entrepreneurship Can Be Nurtured at UC RUSAL President's Forum and HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and UC RUSAL (SEHK: 486, Euronext: RUSAL/RUAL, Moscow Exchange: RUAL/RUALR), a leading global aluminum producer, announce that Prof Dan Shechtman, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 2011 and Philip Tobias Professor of Materials Science, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, spoke at UC RUSAL President’s Forum and HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series. The Forum marked the completion of the five-year partnership between HKUST and UC RUSAL and was well attended by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST & outside the university.

China Vanke Founder and Chairman Mr Wang Shi Shares Insights at HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series today, featuring Mr Wang Shi, Founder and Chairman of China Vanke Co., Ltd. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST.
Mr Wang Shi delivered a speech titled “Choosing Your Own Path” on how he founded Vanke, and how he drew a line in the sand by insisting on high moral business values. He also spoke on his passion for outdoor sports, especially mountain climbing, and how this sport made him realize the impact of global warming and led Vanke to choose the green path as its development strategy. An avid learner and a seasoned decision maker, Mr Wang shared his experience on leaving his comfort zone of business to study overseas, and how he learnt to make tough decisions on what to leave behind, and what to bring forward through Deep Dive initiatives.

Sequoia Capital China Founding and Managing Partner Mr Neil Shen Shares Insights on Entrepreneurship in China at HKUST 25th Anniversary Young Entrepreneurs Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the first talk of its 25th Anniversary Young Entrepreneurs Series on 12 October, featuring Mr Neil Shen, Founding and Managing Partner of Sequoia Capital China. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST.
Speaking on “Entrepreneurship in China”, Mr Shen outlined the key factors for driving entrepreneurship in China. He shared his insights on how technology breakthroughs and innovations are the two main drivers for entrepreneurship and venture capital in China, and that the key for success lies in converting science breakthroughs into commercial applications and products.

HKUST Stages Groundbreaking Ceremony for Water Sports Center Phase I
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has celebrated the groundbreaking of its Water Sports Center Phase 1 project, which will be a new landmark on the campus not only to provide a practical venue for a wide variety of water sport activities, but also to enrich the holistic campus life experience of students and enhance collaboration between the University and the water sports communities.
In order to take full advantage of HKUST’s superb geographical location, which puts it next to one of Hong Kong’s best water areas, President Prof Tony Chan has proposed the building of a water sports center and assigned a task force to spearhead the initiative. Phase 1 of the Center contains a boat shed providing a central storage for various types of boats and equipment, as well as a backup base camp for training and practice.

HKUST and FSDC Hold Forum to Explore Career Opportunities in Financial Services
The School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) and the Financial Services Development Council (FSDC) jointly hosted a forum on 5 October to give students a closer look at the wide variety of career opportunities in the financial services sector.
Entitled “Careers in Financial Services”, the forum is the fifth event under the FSDC's Practitioner Speakers Series, which aims to provide guidance to young graduates and university students and help them plan career paths in the financial industry. Around 100 students attended the forum to explore with a leading financial practitioner the career prospects in the sector.

Schneider Electric Chairman and CEO Mr Jean-Pascal Tricoire Shares Insights on The New Energy World at HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series yesterday, featuring Mr Jean-Pascal Tricoire, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Schneider Electric. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST.
Speaking on "The New Energy World", Mr Tricoire presented an overview on how the energy world is changing from a concentrated and scaled system to a decentralized system with diverse energy generation sources. He also shared his insights on how the convergence of information technology in the energy sector and the emergence of alternative energy generation sources at scalable levels are providing new opportunities for producing, distributing and consuming energy.
