The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library holds an exhibition to display the artworks of a world-renowned photographer Dr Tin Man Lee, who was awarded the Grand Prize in the highly prestigious Nature's Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Competition in 2013, out of 25,000 entries from 50 countries. Titled “Natural World, Cultural Elegance: A Photography Exhibition by Tin Man Lee”, this exhibition features 48 stunning wildlife photos along with multimedia displays, including Nature's winning piece “Pouncing Bear”, which was exhibited in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C., USA. “I am very excited and honored to have my first solo exhibition at HKUST. I love animals and photography, and I hope my photos can raise the awareness of the beauty of nature around us,” said Dr Tin Man Lee.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the first talk of its 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series yesterday, featuring Prof Steven Chu, Nobel Laureate in Physics in 1997 and former US Secretary of Energy.  The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is set to launch a Distinguished Speakers Series to mark its 25th anniversary. With a mission to advance learning and knowledge, the University has invited leaders and experts from around the globe to share their insights with our faculty, students, staff and local audience. The series’ inaugural speaker Prof Steven Chu, Nobel Laureate in Physics in 1997 and former US Secretary of Energy, will deliver a speech entitled “Energy, Climate Change and the Transition to a Sustainable World” on September 15, 2015. Another five Nobel Laureates have also accepted invitations to speak in this series, other distinguished speakers include policy shapers, corporate leaders and entrepreneurs who have made changes in their own innovative ways.

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), a signature program at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has entered its 10th anniversary. The program has not just helped foster a research culture within the undergraduate community over the years, but has also helped students to develop insightful perspectives on their areas of interest, which is beneficial for their pursuit of careers. Pioneered by HKUST, UROP was launched in 2005 to give undergraduate students an early taste of research with the guidance of faculty members. Started with a humble size of some 70 participating students, the program has grown in both scale and impact with 370 students joining in 2013-14. The number of participating faculty members has also jumped nearly four times to 148 over the past decade.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its annual ceremony for the award of Honorary Fellowships today.  Officiating at the ceremony were the Honourable Andrew Liao Cheung-sing, Chairman of HKUST Council, and Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST.  Four distinguished leaders, Mr Nicholas Brooke, Mr Ronald Kee-Young Chao, Dr Steven J DeKrey and Prof Charles G Sodini, were conferred Honorary Fellowships today.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the Third Common Core Course Excellence Award Presentation Ceremony today in recognition of the outstanding Common Core courses. The event highlights the University’s endeavor and commitment to foster a holistic education for undergraduate students. This year’s Excellence Award went to “Identity Goes Global: From Border Crossing to Boundary Remaking” taught by Assistant Prof May Yi Shaw and Mr Bo Xu from the Division of Humanities. The course enables students to study and understand “global identity” across different disciplines such as race, ethnicity, nationality, language, culture or gender with a comprehensive and creative approach. Students are encouraged to think critically about their own identity and the factors that have shaped and continue to influence the core of their own identity.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology held the second inauguration ceremony of named professorships today to honor 4 outstanding faculty members and their donors. “I would like to express my most sincere gratitude to the donors and for their generosity in creating the named professorships,” President Prof Tony F Chan said. “The named professorship appointments ensure the University will maintain excellence in education and research by giving due recognition to our exceptional faculty. HKUST will continue its relentless pursuit for innovation in education and research, in addition to garnering support from society and recruiting talents for the good of the University and the community.”

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its annual Long Service Award Presentation Ceremony, honoring faculty and staff members who reached 20 years of service at the University. HKUST established the Long Service Award to express appreciation and recognition to long-serving faculty and staff members whose hard work and dedication have contributed to the University’s rapid rise over the past 24 years. This year, HKUST presented awards to 163 members who joined the University in 1995. HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan, together with the vice-presidents, deans, heads and directors of departments and units attended the presentation ceremony. The awardees’ families and friends were also invited by the University to join the event and shared the joy at the celebration.
