World Experts in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Gather at HKUST to Share Insights into Future
The Big Data Institute (BDI) of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Friday) organized its first Big Data and AI Day, playing host to a stellar assemblage of world top academics and industry celebrities in the realm of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI), sharing information and insights into the future of this trendy field. Since the establishment of the BDI in 2016, its first Big Data and AI Day drew a learned audience of over 500 guests, including local and overseas academics, leaders in the Big Data and AI-related industries, as well as students from various tertiary institutions in Hong Kong and abroad. The overwhelming attendance attested to the key role of HKUST's research in these fields.

HKUST Hackathon Received a Record-High Participation
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the largest student-driven hackathon in Asia from April 21-23, 2017, with more than 600 participants coming from various local and overseas universities. The HKUST hackathon is a creativity-to-reality platform which brings together like-minded youths from different academic backgrounds to develop product prototypes, build friendships, and exchange ideas with industry experts. This year’s edition added a new hardware component which challenges the participants to bring their skills to a whole new level—all participating teams had to come up with a hardware solution to tackle within 48 hours. For contestants joining the software hackathon, they were required to work out a software solution within 24 hours under the themes of Gaming, Economy, Healthcare and Transportation.

25th Anniversary Book Launch
The University?s 25th birthday celebration ended in the Library with a book launch on February 27. Prometheus in the Sky, is published to commemorate the innovation and diverse accomplishments of the University in its short history.

Launch of 25th Anniversary Book “Prometheus in the Sky”
The title of the book Prometheus in the Sky is derived from Percy Bysshe Shelley’s idealist Prometheus Unbound, which conveys the morals of altruism, courage, innovation, and care for society. Prometheus was described as the one who tamed fire for humankind, generated curiosity in science, aroused study of medicine to save lives and gave humans language for better communication and knowledge. In celebrating the 25th anniversary of the University, the title echoes its core spirit as a science and technology university with a global vision and local commitment.

HKUST Presents Long Service Awards 2017
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its annual Long Service Award Presentation Ceremony to honor faculty and staff members who have served the University for 20 years. HKUST established the Long Service Award to express appreciation and recognition to long-serving faculty and staff members whose dedication and hard work have contributed to the University’s rapid rise over the past 26 years. This year, HKUST presented awards to 66 colleagues with 20 years of service at University. HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan, together with the vice-presidents, deans, heads and directors of departments and offices joined the presentation ceremony. The awardees’ families and friends were also invited by the University to attend the event and share the happiness of the celebration.
