Academic arrangements for the Winter and Spring Terms 2020-21

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will introduce a novel academic framework “Major + X” as a new degree option for undergraduates.  Blending traditional programs with emerging hot topics such as artificial intelligence, this new degree structure not only offers students with greater flexibility, but also allows timely curriculum adjustment and better integration between existing and new knowledge to meet with the emerging need of the society. 

The School of Business and Management of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) announced today the launch of the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program. The four-year program will provide rigorous and professional training for participants to develop a portfolio of skills in conducting practice-based research. This distinctive program is designed for motivated leaders, senior executives and entrepreneurs to enhance their research capabilities, develop deep knowledge and innovative insights for positive business and societal impacts. “Committed to academic excellence, HKUST has rapidly risen in recognition in its short history and become one of the most respected business schools in Asia,” said Prof. TAM Kar Yan, Dean of HKUST Business School. “We are pleased to present our new DBA program, which attests to our 30 years of ongoing commitment in driving rigorous research and global influence.”

The Common Core Program, an integral component of the undergraduate curriculum at HKUST, aspires to bring students from all disciplines a balanced and broad education that nurtures them to be responsible citizens and independent thinkers with the heart and aspiration to excel in their endeavors. Among a wide array of common core programs, “Introduction to Food Science and Technology” remains the top choice of students because it serves up an appetizing experience: they get to make bread, cookies, tofu, and beer, and learn why some food tastes better deep fried.

Prof. Paul FORSTER from the Department of Management and Division of Environment and Sustainability, who has recently been awarded IPO (Interdisciplinary Programs Office) Teaching Excellence Award for the postgraduate category, has decided to disclose his decades-long battle with depression, in the hope of breaking the mental health stigma and encouraging people to seek help for mental health problems.

Students attending the classes of Prof. Julian GROVES of the Division of Social Science understand that switching off and putting away their electronic devices is mandatory—even the use of laptops or tablets for note-taking are discouraged—because Prof. Groves reckons that while the internet can be an important resource for educators, “mobile devices can be a terrible distraction to classroom learning”. The students might not like it at first, but they rarely complain about it because they are offered “something equally compelling in return” which involves many interactive activities such as surveys, quizzes, simulations, and discussions to keep them engaged.
