Science and Business
To address the meaningful connections among the disciplines, a new interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Business (BIBU) program will be launched at HKUST in the 2016-17 academic year.
The program, jointly developed by HKUST’s School of Science and School of Business and Management, is the first undergraduate program in Hong Kong which connects Biotechnology to Business.
The interdisciplinary curriculum, which comprises about equal number of courses in science and business, equips students with a solid foundation of essential technical knowledge (life science, biotechnology) and business know-how (accounting, economics, operations management, and many others).

HKUST and University of Waterloo Launch Dual Engineering PhD Degree
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of Waterloo, Canada’s leading innovation university, will introduce dual doctoral degrees in engineering that will allow select students to simultaneously earn a PhD from each institution.
Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST, and Prof Feridun Hamdullahpur, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waterloo, signed a memorandum of understanding establishing the new program at Waterloo on 7 October. The partnership, that will begin next year, forges a powerful academic alliance between leading universities in Asia and North America.
“I am extremely proud to combine our innovation power to train the next generation of scholars and innovators,” said Prof Hamdullahpur. “This PhD education partnership will allow doctoral candidates from top notch Engineering Faculties to build a foundation on which to establish further academic and research collaborations.”

HKUST Launches Open Online Courses in Full Stack Web Development on Coursera to Advance Access to Career-Relevant Education
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is launching an online course series teaching Full Stack Web Development on Coursera, the world’s largest open online education provider. Scheduled to start on September 15th, the program, named“Full Stack Web Development Specialization”, is composed of a series of courses taught by the University’s top faculty and accessible to anyone. HKUST New Program Merges Innovation with Community Service Students Implement Solutions to Improve Health Care Problems in Cambodia

Crossing multi-cultural landscapes
Facing the global trend of internationalization and multiculturalism, it is important for us to develop critical thinking with diversified perspectives of the world. It would be a very precious opportunity to gain such knowledge. That is why Vanessa Lau and Matthew Tang are so grateful for having the chance to work in the offices of United States Congressmen.
Supported by the University, the two Global China Studies students under the School of Humanities and Social Science joined an exchange program offered by the Catholic University of America (UCA) at Washington DC. Since January, they have been working as congressional interns in the offices of Chicago Democrat Congressman Bobby Rush and Alaska Republican Congressman Don Young respectively.

Boundless Learning in the World of MOOCs
In the fascinating, unfolding world of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), a whole new set of relationships between learners is being forged, according to Prof King L Chow, Professor in the Division of Life Science at HKUST, one of the institutions pioneering the way in Asia for these global courses. “In the past, university students would only discuss with classmates when doing group projects. Now in my course, I have seen high school students, a graduate student, an archeologist, chefs and homemakers discussing recipes together.”

Experiencing the excitement of discovery Through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program

HKUST is well known for its Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP), which encourages students to gain early research experience with distinguished professors. UROP is not officially open to freshmen. However, in the first week of the first semester in Year 1, I decided to email Prof Kwok Yip Szeto in the Department of Physics to express my interest. Very fortunately, he decided to accept me and I started doing theoretical physics research under his supervision.
