A Homecoming
A first generation graduate from HKUST, Professor Rachel Ngai went around the world, came back and contributed to where it all started.
Born in China and moved to Hong Kong as a six-year-old, Prof Rachel Ngai still remembers fondly how life was different in her adoptive homeland. “The first time I noticed the striking differences in the economies of different places was in high school,” Rachel remembers. “I was a tutor in Hong Kong and my salary was HK$100 an hour, so much higher than that of my father who was a pharmacist, earning HK$300 a month in China.”

Kellogg-HKUST EMBA Tops Inaugural QS Global Rankings
The Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA (EMBA) Program is ranked the top in the world in the inaugural Global EMBA Rankings conducted by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
For the first time, QS publishes both the “Global EMBA Rankings by Region” and the “Global Joint EMBA Rankings” that features programs jointly delivered by two or more business schools across multiple locations or platforms. The Kellogg-HKUST EMBA is not only ranked the best joint EMBA program, but also the top performing program of the 120 programs rated worldwide.
Welcoming the recognition, Prof Tam Kar Yan, Dean of HKUST Business School, said, “Launched in 1998, the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA is the first joint EMBA program in Asia. The Program has maintained its leading position and found the right strategies for success in an era of constant change. HKUST Wins Asia Pacific Region Award for Remodeling Central Chiller Plant that Saves Millions of Dollars and Over 20 Percent of Energy Consumption
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has won the 2016 Energy Project of the Year Award for the Asia Pacific Region, conferred by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) in recognition of its project to upgrade the University’s central chiller plant into a district cooling system, which saves millions of dollars in costs and energy consumption.
Seawater-cooled central chilling was a pioneering technology which HKUST adopted since its early days to provide air-conditioning for its Academic Building. When the new eight-story Cheng Yu Tung Building (CYT) was under planning in 2012, the University decided to expand the capacity of the original plant, instead of building a new air cooling system, to maximize efficiency and reduce carbon footprint.
