HKUST's Dean Of Science Prof Nancy Ip elected as Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences
Prof Nancy Ip, Dean of Science, The Morningside Professor of Life Science and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been elected as a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The NAS is the oldest and most prestigious scientific organization in the United States that represents all disciplines of science. Membership is a mark of excellence as it is by election only, and based on distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. It is one of the highest honors bestowed by a US scientific organization.

Two HKUST Professors Honored The Croucher Innovation Awards 2015
Dr Tom Hiu Tung Cheung, Assistant Professor of the Division of Life Science, and Dr Kam Tuen Law, Assistant Professor of the Department of Physics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were honored the prestigious Croucher Innovation Awards 2015 by the Croucher Foundation for their distinguished scientific research achievements. Each award carries a value of up to HK$5 million over five years. The presentation ceremony held today was officiated by Mr John Tsang Chun-wah, GBM, JP, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government.

HKUST Students Fly High in National Aircraft Design Competition
Five undergraduate students from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering came second among 153 teams in the first and biggest national aircraft design competition organized by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

Young Fencing Star Shines at the Asian Games
Fencing is a highly competitive and strategic sport which requires high level of agility, endurance and concentration. When ready for combat, the fencer has to get started with a defensive posture, keeping a clear mind on when to hold back and when to wield the foil to score.
HKUST’s young fencer Kimberley Vanessa Cheung, a Year 3 student majored in Biomedical Engineering, won bronze for the Women’s Foil Team event in the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, adding a kick to Hong Kong’s impressive medals table. Kimberley’s talent was first spotted in Primary 4; since then, she has reaped numerous awards for Hong Kong, and became a member of the Hong Kong Fencing Association. Currently, she ranks first among the young fencers under 20 in Hong Kong and second overall, marking another momentous milestone in her fencing career.

HKUST Attains the Highest Proportion of Internationally Excellent Research Work in the UGC Research Assessment Exercise 2014
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is very pleased that we have achieved outstanding ratings in the Research Assessment Exercise 2014 (RAE 2014) of the University Grants Committee (UGC) according to the most rigorous standards. This shows that the University has attained internationally excellent levels in our research areas. HKUST strives to fulfil our mission of fostering innovative academic research and education, and encourages our faculty members to conduct large scale interdisciplinary research for knowledge transfer. Two HKUST Electronic and Computer Engineering Professors Elected IEEE Fellows
Prof Pascale Fung and Prof Patrick Yue of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were elected Fellows of the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for 2015, bringing the total number of IEEE Fellows at HKUST to 35.

HKUST Physicist Prof Michael Altman Named Fellow by American Physical Society
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is pleased to announce that Prof Michael Altman, Head of the Department of Physics, was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). Upon recommendation of the APS Division of Condensed Matter Physics, Prof Altman was cited “for development and use of spin polarized low energy electron microscopy to understand surface processes of solids.”
Prof Altman joined HKUST as a founding member of the Department of Physics in 1991. He received the HKUST School of Science Teaching Award in 1997 and has been serving as Department Head since 2011. His research in condensed matter physics is targeted at understanding the structure, dynamics, electronic and magnetic properties of solid surfaces, interfaces and thin film nanostructures, including diffusion and growth, kinetic instabilities and quantum size effects.
