The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) PhD student Zhang Shanchao, Department of Physics, has won the 2013 Young Scientist Award. Zhang was awarded the honor in the Physical/ Mathematical Science category for the project "Coherent Quantum Interaction Between Photons and Atoms". He also received the Best Poster Award for his poster on "Single-Photon Absorption and Reemission in Two-Level Cold Atoms" at the 21st Annual Conference of Hong Kong Institution of Science. Another PhD student Chen Shuming from the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, received the runner-up prize in the Engineering Science Category with his project on white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs).

Prof Tianshou Zhao, Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Director of HKUST Energy Institute, and his researchers have received one of the most prestigious awards in science and technology in China for the second consecutive year. Prof Zhao and his researchers received a 2013 State Natural Science Award (Second Class) from the State Council of the People’s Republic of China for their pioneering work on Direct Alcohol Fuel Cells (DAFC).

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has climbed to No.18 in the high-profile Global Employability University Ranking 2013. HKUST is the only university in Greater China in the top 20. The survey and rankings are conducted by Emerging, a French human resources consultancy, and Trendence, a leading European research institute. The ranking was derived from the responses of 5,000 recruiters in a total of 30 countries and regions, including France, Germany, Italy, the US, the UK, Japan, Singapore, Mainland China and Hong Kong: Those responding comprised 2,700 online, and some 2,300 CEOs and chairmen from the leading 1,000 companies, who cast votes for the top 150 universities producing the most employable graduates.

For the fifth straight year, the Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA (EMBA) program has been ranked the top performing EMBA program in the world by the Financial Times. It also marks the program’s 15th anniversary and its sixth No. 1 ranking in the global survey. In the newly released Financial Times EMBA Ranking 2013, the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program also placed No. 3 in terms of “Aims Achieved”, which measures the extent to which the alumni fulfilled their goals after taking the program. The program placed 3rd in the work experience of students and 5th in terms of their diversity. The program is jointly offered by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

A research team led by Prof Kei May Lau, Chair Professor in the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has developed a novel "match-making" technology to deposit next-generation high-speed energy-efficient transistors on silicon using high-mobility compound semiconductor materials. These devices seek to reduce power consumption by as much as 10 times and increase switching speed five folds. The team has received the JSAP Outstanding Paper Award by The Japan Society of Applied Physics, the only research team in Hong Kong and Mainland China to receive this award in its history since 1979.

Acknowledgment of the dedication of faculty and staff who have worked at HKUST for two decades. Congratulations and a major celebration were the order of the day for 240 members of staff and faculty in February when they shared memories of 20 years of working at HKUST at the 5th Long Service Award Ceremony. The happy occasion, attended by the President and other senior management, recognized the dedicated service of members of the University community representing all aspects of campus life, including faculty members, administrators, language instructors, safety officers, technicians, and other supporting staff. What an achievement! In 2012, HKUST will have the highest number of newly elected Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) among universities and institutions in Asia . It will also bring the HKUST Engineering School 's total number of IEEE Fellows to 25. The IEEE is the world's leading professional association for advancing technology for humanity and has 395,000 members in more than 160 countries. Fellowship is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as an honor only given to a select group of members with extraordinary accomplishments in their fields.
