HKUST has proudly phased out sale of plastic bottled water under 1 Litre on campus from 22 March 2018.

The Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) approved today the appointment of Prof Wei Shyy as the next President with effect from 1 September 2018, succeeding Prof Tony F Chan who will step down from the position on 31 August 2018.

Prof Ba Shusong, Chief China Economist of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) and Chief Economist of China Banking Association, presented a gripping lecture on Hong Kong’s role as a global financial center in facilitating renminbi-denominated assets allocation, in the wake of renminbi globalization. The lecture took place at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on 16 November 2017. The talk entitled “Pricing renminbi assets: the disruptive trends behind renminbi joining the ranks of international currencies” was organized by HKUST Business School’s Executive MBA for Chinese Executives (HKUST EMBA) Program, a world-class bilingual program specifically designed for Chinese speaking executives and entrepreneurs in Asia and the Greater China.

We welcome the Chief Executive’s 2017 Policy Address which states the Government’s position in support of the higher education sector of Hong Kong.  It also reflects the Government’s commitment to a comprehensive and holistic initiative to enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong education sector internationally.  In particular, we very much support the Government’s funding initiative for research and development, with a goal to double the total expenditure on R&D as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product to about 1.5% in five years’ time.  We also welcome the setting up of the Hostel Development Fund for the provision of additional hostel places, which will help solve the problem of shortage in hostel places and thus improve the learning experience of students in Hong Kong. We will work proactively with the Government on the implementation of these initiatives in the higher education sector for the betterment of Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today the appointment of Dr Sabrina M Y Lin as the University’s next Vice-President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA), starting 1 November, 2017. Dr Lin, currently Corporate Vice President, Commercial Business for Greater China at Cisco Systems Inc., is a senior executive with a track record spanning across global technology companies, universities and entrepreneurial businesses, as well as an international background with extensive work experience in the North and South America, Asia Pacific and Greater China.  She is one of the few Asian women leaders at Cisco and is among the 2017 Forbes China’s Top 50 Business Women.  Her appointment is the result of a rigorous global search.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology announced today that President Tony Chan has submitted his resignation to Council. President Chan will step down from the position on 1 September 2018. In the interim, he will assist the Council to find a successor. During his nine-year tenure, President Tony Chan has overseen HKUST’s growth and it is now widely regarded as one of the best universities in the world. After careful consideration, he feels now is the right time, for both the University and himself, to begin the search for a successor to lead the University into its next phase.
