Compassionate and altruistic, one energetic Indonesian HKUST BEng graduate is using the knowledge and skills she obtained at university to help change the world for the better. Sustainability is more than a buzz phrase for Cindy Aiko Filbert TANAKA (BEng in Chemical and Environmental Engineering), who is rapidly building a career with one of the world’s leading business consultancies.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has long been dedicated to advancing medical technology and fostering innovation to drive technological breakthroughs. HKUST recently hosted its inaugural short course for senior healthcare executives from the Mainland. This course is the first short course under "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Medical and Health Scholarship-cum-Fellowship for Top Talent in the Mainland" following the signing of the “Collaboration Agreement Between the National Health Commission and The Hong Kong Jockey Club on a Scholarship-cum-Fellowship for Top Talent in the Mainland” last year.

Pursuing undergraduate studies in Hong Kong 15 years ago marked the start of a highly rewarding journey for Malaysian native Dr. Nick CHIN Jing-Wei. He not only realized his dream of establishing a technology start-up, but also set up his own family here.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently hosted an engaging dialogue featuring three Nobel Prize winners, drawing nearly 200 students, faculty members and guests on campus, and an additional 2,000 online viewers from sister institutions across Mainland China. The event highlighted HKUST’s dedication to fostering cross-disciplinary innovation, and bridging the local scientific community with global thought leaders. As part of the Hong Kong World Youth Science Conference and Xiang Jiang Nobel Forum this year, the event titled “Together with the Scientists – Nobel Laureates Visit HKUST” took place on April 14 in collaboration with the Hong Kong Alumni Association of Beijing Universities. Academic-entrepreneur Professor KO Ping-Keung came to HKUST in 1993 as Visiting Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering after working at the University of California, Berkeley, as Director of the Microfabrication Laboratory from 1984-1993, and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from 1991-1993. He served as Dean of the HKUST School of Engineering from 1995-2000 and in 2002 received the prestigious IEEE Solid-State Circuits Award. He has since become an innovator and angel investor in China’s chip industry and is a Professor Emeritus at HKUST. In 2024, Prof. Ko was awarded a HKUST Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his long-standing service and commitment to the University’s development.

Prof. Philip CHAN Ching-Ho joined the School of Engineering in 1991 as a founding member. He served as Head of the School of Engineering’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department from 1995-2002 and Dean of the School from 2003-09. He was Director of the Nanosystem Fabrication Facility from 1997-2003. From 2010-20, he held the positions of Deputy President and Provost at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He became Professor Emeritus in HKUST’s Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering in 2010.
