With the success of the “UNIfy: Skip the Straw” campaign last year, eight UGC-funded universities will launch a “UNIfy:BYO” campaign on March 11, 2019 to reduce disposable waste. The Campaign signifies the joint efforts of City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Education University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and The University of Hong Kong to reduce disposable waste. This year, the BYO campaign is focused on the concept of “bring your own” where students and staff at all universities are encouraged to bring their own reusable items, whether it’s a bag, bottle or container, when purchasing food and other items on campus. The campaign hopes to reduce the use of disposable items and create a culture of using reusables across Hong Kong campuses.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today signed a framework agreement with the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen to plan the establishment of the SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics (Joint School). Riding on the complementary research strengths of both universities, the proposed Joint School is set to become a multilateral collaborative platform for industry, academia and research at the national level, facilitating both nurturing of market-desired high-caliber talents and innovative research in key strategic areas including integrated circuit (IC), system-on-chip design for communications, artificial intelligence and robotics, as well as next generation microelectronics device technology such as wide bandgap semiconductors.

Eight UGC-funded universities will launch a joint environmental campaign “UNIfy: Skip the Straw” on March 12 to reduce single-use plastic straws. The Campaign signifies the joint efforts of City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Education University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and The University of Hong Kong to reduce plastic waste. The universities will hold a “No Straw Week” or “No Straw Day” on their campuses during the week of March 12-16, where campus catering outlets will only offer straws when requested. Other activities include film screenings, zero waste markets and reusable straw giveaways. The universities have also pledged to introduce long-term measures including regular awareness campaigns and no straw days, or a campus-wide ban of plastic straws.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) becomes a founding member of the newly established Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) on April 29 in Beijing. Originated by Tsinghua University, AUA consists of 15 Asian universities, aiming to enhance cooperation and communication among universities in the region, and play a role in solving regional and global issues. The AUA pledges to promote mobility of students, scholars and staff among all members, to strengthen research collaboration and joint innovation, to establish high-level dialogues and forums to discuss higher education strategies and policies, and to compile and publish annual reports on Asian higher education.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is leading a multi-disciplinary team comprising engineers, computer scientists, environmental scientists and ecologists from various universities and institutions, to study the mechanism of debris flow in efforts to mitigate the risks and damage of landslides in Hong Kong.

President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Prof Tony Chan led a delegation to the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual conference in Davos, Switzerland.   In Davos, HKUST was the only Asian university to conduct an IdeasLab, where four professors shared their insights with some of the world’s top minds and decision makers on how a seamless merging of virtual realities and our physical world could improve human life.  Seven universities were invited to hold IdeasLab at Winter Davos this year: HKUST, Oxford, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon.

President Tony Chan of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has been invited to share his insights with top global leaders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting – which will be held between 21 and 24 January 2015 in Davos, Switzerland.  In addition, four HKUST professors will hold an IdeasLab at Winter Davos – HKUST is the only university in Asia to hold an IdeasLab at Davos this year.  Only six other universities are holding IdeasLab at Davos--including Oxford, Harvard, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, etc.

A group of researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has become the member of a team of physicists from Hong Kong, who has now formally joined one of the most prestigious physics experiments in the world – a top particle physics experiment. Following a unanimous vote of approval today by its Collaboration Board, ATLAS has accepted the Hong Kong team as a member.
