Hey there! I’m excited to share my journey with you. Growing up as a beach lover, I spent countless summer days swimming, yachting, and surfing. I loved the beach, but I always hated accidentally gulping down salty water! I wondered why seawater was salty and if it could be made tasty to drink. Little did I know, this curiosity would spark my passion for energy and environmental engineering.

A team of researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) estimated that about 24,000 to 36,000 early mortality cases caused by air pollution may have been delayed due to Mainland China’s earlier mobility-restriction management (city lockdown*) to curb the spread of COVID-19, as such measures have brought down the amount of Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) at lockdown cities by a notably 25 per cent year-on-year during the first two months of this year -  significantly elevated the region’s air quality.

Prof. ZHAO Tianshou, Cheong Ying Chan Professor of Engineering and Environment, Chair Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Director of Energy Institute at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) – bringing the total number of CAS members at HKUST to five. CAS membership is the highest academic recognition conferred by the Chinese government for science and technology research achievements. Only scientists who have made significant contributions to the advancement of science can be nominated, and they require the support of more than two third of the members from their own division in order to be elected.  Among the 64 members and 20 Foreign members elected for 2019, Prof. Zhao is the only academic chosen from Hong Kong under the Technological Sciences division, for his achievements in engineering thermos-physics and clean energy production.

To utilize the natural resources and reduce the operational cost of the orphanages, a group of HKUST students from Connect service learning program have spent the last two summers there to help build a solar energy system as the country is shiny for most of the time during the year.
