Inauguration of France-HKUST Innovation Hub
The Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) are joining hands to establish the France-HKUST Innovation Hub. Mr Eric BERTI, Consul General of France, and Prof Tony F CHAN, President of HKUST, attended the inauguration ceremony on 24 March 2017 at the HKUST Lee Shau Kee Campus.

Long Service Award 2017
The annual Long Service Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 2 March 2017 to express appreciation and recognition to long-serving faculty and staff members who have dedicated their hard work to contribute to the University for 20 years. This year, HKUST presented awards to 66 colleagues.

HKUST Researchers Create Solid Metamaterials with Fluid-like Property that Can Be Used for Wave Filtering and May Help Protect Buildings from Earthquakes
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) researchers have successfully created solid composite materials with the unique wave property of fluid, a property of which forbids the transmission of transverse waves. The transverse waves can lead to destructive horizontal shaking during earthquake. Such composite, also called “metamaterials”, can be used for wave filtering and vibration control, and may eventually provide an alternative earthquake proofing solution as well as improve the efficiency of medical ultrasound transducers.

HKUST Students Receive Donation to Solve Healthcare Problems in Indonesia and Cambodia
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a donation from Equal Opportunities Foundation for the establishment of Student Innovation for Global Health Technology (SIGHT) Scholar Scheme, which enables undergraduates to work on their self-proposed healthcare projects in full time internship locally or overseas. Two teams consisted of six students were awarded this year.

The project, established and driven by students, conducts far-reaching interviews with a diverse range of HKUST-ers, exploring the culture, background, and personal experiences of individuals across the University’s globalized community. Quotes, moving anecdotes, and thought-provoking views are then shared through Facebook and compiled into an annual book of stories, distributed free on campus.
