HKUST Hosts Environment Week Fostering Green Campus Life and Waste Reduction
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) launches its Environment Week starting today under the theme of 'Energy and Waste - Challenges for a Sustainable Planet'. A varied array of fun and educational activities will be hosted by the Health, Safety and Environment Office (HSEO) to drive greater participation among students, faculty and staff in green lifestyles.

HKUST Research Teams Led by Prof Nancy Ip and Prof Benzhong Tang Awarded Major 973 Program Grants
Two research projects led by Prof Nancy Ip, Dean of Science, Director of State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience, The Morningside Professor of Life Science, and Prof Benzhong Tang, Stephen Kam Chuen Cheong Professor of Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have been incorporated into the National Basic Research Program, better known as 973 Program, and awarded grants of over RMB 30 million respectively.

HKUST Holds the First Inauguration Ceremony of Named Professorships Partnership for Excellence
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the First Inauguration Ceremony of Named Professorships today to confer named professorships on 13 outstanding faculty members. Made under the University’s newly launched “HKUST Named Professorship Program”, the named professorship appointments are intended to foster the University’s education and research excellence by giving due recognition to the exceptional faculty.
Addressing the ceremony, President Prof Tony F Chan said the professorship holders all excel in a diverse range of disciplines encompassing science, engineering, business, social science, life science, nanotechnology and others. Their education and research accomplishments have constantly been placed at the forefront of international scholarship, helping the University develop into a world-class research university. The honorees’ passion for teaching and research also sets an inspiring example for students’ learning and personal development.

HKUST President Pleads for Global Cooperation in Science & Technology and Higher Education at World Economic Forum Annual Meeting
President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Prof Tony F Chan was invited to participate in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2013 in Davos, Switzerland, where he engaged in vibrant discussions with community leaders and global business leaders, as well as presidents from world-class universities on global science and technology outlook and emerging trends in higher education.

HKUST Presents Long Service Awards
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its fourth Long Service Award Presentation Ceremony honoring faculty and staff members who have served the University for 20 years.
HKUST established the Long Service Award to express appreciation and recognition to long-serving faculty and staff members whose hard work and dedication have contributed to the University's rapid rise over the past 21 years. This year, HKUST is presenting the Award to 274 members who joined the University in 1993.
HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan, together with the vice-presidents, deans, heads and directors were present in the presentation ceremony. The awardees' families and friends were also invited by the University. Over 600 persons joined in the celebration.

Oxford and HKUST Sign MoU in Davos on Establishing a Leadership and Public Policy Series
On 25 January 2013 in Davos, Switzerland, University of Oxford Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Hamilton and Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) President Professor Tony Chan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for International Collaboration. Under this collaboration, both sides agree to jointly establish the Oxford-HKUST Leadership and Public Policy Series, which aims to provide executive education short courses to public sector officials from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and eventually Asia.

HKUST Faculty Win China's State Science and Technology Awards
Prof Tianshou Zhao, Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of Center for Sustainable Energy Technology, and Prof Qian Zhang, Professor of Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were recognized with the most prestigious awards in science and technology in China - State Natural Science Award (Second Class) bestowed by the State Council of the People's Republic of China. Another research project "Discovery and investigation of novel magnetocaloric effect materials" by Prof Xixiang Zhang, a former professor and now an Adjunct Professor at HKUST's Physics Department, and the research team from the Institute of Physics Chinese Academy of Sciences also won the State Natural Science Award (Second Class).
