Robots Command a Bigger Presence at HKUST
Robots are commanding a bigger and bigger presence at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), as evident from the Program Parade of the School of Engineering held on campus today. After the opening speeches by President Tony F Chan and Dean of Engineering Prof Khaled Ben Letaief, a robot took over the lectern and gave a 11-minute presentation covering the latest developments of the Engineering School and the special programs designed to celebrate HKUST's 20th Anniversary. Prof Ben Letaief also announced that HKUST's Robotics Team has grown 75% in terms of membership, and has been divided into four sub-teams, each taking part in one of four major competitions - the "Robocon Hong Kong Contest", "Remotely Operated Vehicles Competition" featuring underwater robots; "Smart Car Competition" and "NAO Robocup".

HKUST Marketing Professor Anirban Mukhopadhyay Wins International Award for Consumer Insights
Professor Anirban Mukhopadhyay of the Marketing Department of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) has been honored with the Early Career Award from the Society for Consumer Psychology (SCP) for his outstanding research in marketing and consumer behavior. The prestigious international award is given to honor a psychologist who is no more than eight years post-PhD and has made significant scientific contributions to consumer psychology. The SCP is an American-based organization that aims to further the advancement of the discipline of consumer psychology in a global context.

HKUST Awards Student Activities That Further the "1-HKUST" Concept and Enrich Campus Life
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today presents awards for five top student-initiated activities that enrich and give meaning to campus life. Called "President's 1-HKUST Student Life Award", it is bestowed on five winning student activities that best enrich the student experience. Each activity will receive an average of about $10,000 in funding support. Officiating at the presentation ceremony, HKUST President Tony Chan said that he had collected numerous novel suggestions from his monthly tea gatherings with students, and the Award aims to encourage students to exercise their creativity in designing and implementing activities that satisfy the four criteria of serving social needs, originality, feasibility, and having an impact on the student community. The students responded enthusiastically to the launch of this Award. Five projects were selected from 23 entries by a judging panel to receive the Award. They were:

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary and Renews Commitment to Science and Technology
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted its 20th Anniversary Grand Celebration today, with HKSAR Chief Executive Mr Donald Tsang and the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Mr Han Qide officiating with a distinguished array of celebrities. Among the officiating guests were Mr Peng Qinghua, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr Lu Xinhua, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC in the HKSAR, and Ms Yin Xiaojing, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR. A number of senior Government officials, including Secretary for Education Mr Michael Suen and Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Prof KC Chan, also attended.

HKUST President Tony F Chan and Caltech President Jean-Lou Chameau Share Insights into Global Higher Education Development
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) President Tony F Chan today had an inspiring discussion with President Jean-Lou Chameau of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) at the Presidents Forum at HKUST. Both HKUST and Caltech are elite universities, with relatively small student numbers but outstanding achievements by their faculty, alumni and students. The Presidents Forum is one of the celebratory activities for HKUST's 20th Anniversary. President Chan furthered his studies at Caltech after completing his secondary education in Hong Kong. Caltech is an internationally renowned university with a long history. Over 30 of their faculty or alumni have so far received Nobel Prizes. HKUST to Launch Its First Summer Institute for Senior Secondary School Students
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will launch its first Summer Institute to provide to Secondary 4 and 5 (Grades 10 and 11) students with 27 credit-bearing courses offered by its four Schools - Science, Engineering, Business and Management, as well as Humanities and Social Science. Prof Kar Yan Tam, HKUST Associate Provost and Dean of Students, said, "Apart from providing quality education to undergraduates and postgraduate students, HKUST is also keen on providing senior secondary school students with interesting, useful and easy-to-comprehend courses in various subjects. The students will also have an early experience of university life and even get a taste of how university professors deliver lectures."

Bringing Einstein Back to Hong Kong
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) joins hands with the Swiss Consulate, swissnex China, the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Education Bureau to launch the “Einstein in Hong Kong” program to offer to the people of Hong Kong a series of scientific and artistic events centered on the legendary Albert Einstein – one of the greatest scientists in the twentieth century. Prof Einstein had visited Hong Kong twice in his life – in 1922 just before he received the Nobel Prize in Physics, and also in the following year. There will be an exhibition, an academic conference, public lectures, music workshops and concerts, day camps for secondary students, and a writing workshop and competition, to be held over a five-month period from April to August this year.
