Over 30 students at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have so far been admitted to PhD programs at some of the world’s top universities with full scholarship support, thanks in part to their participation in the University’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). The UROP is a special program within HKUST that aims to develop a research culture at the undergraduate level by giving undergraduate students the opportunity to work closely with faculty members and to take part in research, scholarly and creative activities. Under UROP, an undergraduate student partners with a faculty member to work on a specific subject area, and is required to submit a report at the end of the project period, which is usually several months. In 2009, over 250 undergraduates completed the UROP, supervised by about 90 professors. When the program was introduced in 2005, 70 students took part.

A Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has become one of only five fellows of the Institute of Industrial Engineers in the Greater China Region. Prof Fugee Tsung, Head of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management (IELM) at HKUST, has received the IIE Fellow 2010 Award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) – the highest honor bestowed by the organization in recognition of his significant contributions in the field of industrial engineering. Prof. Tsung said, “Before 2000, only five universities in China have established Industrial Engineering (IE) programs. But now, in 2010, over 180 universities in China have IE departments. I am delighted to see that IE is gaining increasing recognition in this region in recent years.”

At the Board Meeting of the Nansha Information Technology Park on 31 March 2010, a resolution was made to formally appoint the main contractor for the construction of the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School building. All the relevant procedures have been completed and actual construction will start shortly, with the finishing date scheduled for next year. This sets a new milestone for the development of the Graduate School. The new building will have a total floor area of 25,000 square meters, complete with laboratories for research and education in environmental and energy technology, new materials, biotechnology and information technology. The building will also house teaching facilities, a lecture theater, a library, and other student amenities.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is pleased to announce that the University is the first choice among top graduates worldwide pursuing PhD studies in Hong Kong. The results of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2010 / 11, announced by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong, show that close to 30% of the awardees worldwide chose HKUST as the destination for doctorate studies. 115 international elite candidates have accepted offers of the first round of the Scheme established by RGC, and among which 34 candidates (29.6%) are going to HKUST - the highest among the seven UGC-funded institutions in Hong Kong participating in the scheme.

香 港 科 技 大 學(科 大)生 物 系 王 文 雄 教 授 獲 國 家 教 育 部 2009 年 度 高 等 學 校 科 學 研 究 優 秀 成 果 獎 （ 下 稱 「 成 果 獎 」 ） 自 然 科 學 獎 一 等 獎 ， 成 為 首 兩 位 獲 一 等 獎 的 本 港 大 學 教 授 之 一 。 王 文 雄 教 授 憑 著 海 洋 生 態 系 統 重 金 屬 的 食 物 鏈 傳 遞 和 生 物 可 利 用 性 項 目 ， 勇 奪 「 成 果 獎 」 的 自 然 科 學 獎 一 等 獎 。 他 的 研 究 有 助 保 護 水 生 生 物 及 管 理 海 洋 環 境 ， 並 確 保 食 品 安 全 。 該 獎 項 是 國 家 教 育 部 設 立 的 科 技 專 項 獎 ， 對 象 是 全 國 高 等 院 校 。 這 獎 項 嘉 許 在 科 技 方 面 有 突 出 貢 獻 的 院 校 和 個 人 ， 2009 年 首 次 將 本 港 院 校 納 入 頒 授 範 圍 。 全 港 有7個 項 目 獲 獎 ， 其 中 只 有 兩 項 獲 一 等 獎 ， 王 教 授 為 兩 位 一 等 獎 得 主 之 一 。 王 教 授 這 項 研 究 ， 是 故 關 於 重 金 屬 如 何 透 過 海 洋 生 態 系 統 中 的 食 物 鏈 得 以 傳 遞 。 以 往 ， 科 學 家 都 知 道 水 銀 等 重 金 屬 ， 在 海 洋 生 態 系 統 中 透 過 大 魚 吃 小 魚 、 人 類 吃 魚 的 食 物 鏈 ， 為 人 類 所 吸 收 ， 並 對 人 類 造 成 不 同 程 度 的 禍 害 與 中 毒 。 譬 如 水 銀 毒 可 引 致 男 性 不 育 ， 在 有 吃 海 鮮 文 化 的 香 港 尤 為 常 見 ； 鉛 毒 引 致 神 經 發 育 疾 病 ， 在 廣 東 情 況 嚴 重 。 雖 然 如 此 ， 過 往 科 學 家 卻 缺 乏 系 統 性 的 方 法 去 將 重 金 屬 在 海 洋 生 態 系 統 傳 遞 的 情 況 評 價 及 量 化 。 王 教 授 的 研 究 ， 則 使 科 學 家 首 次 可 以 對 金 屬 食 物 鏈 傳 遞 的 重 要 性 進 行 定 量 （ 不 僅 僅 是 定 性 ） 評 價 。

聯 合 國 科 教 文 組 織 「 多 元 文 化 特 聘 顧 問 」 、 被 喻 為 全 球 最 具 影 響 力 的 國 畫 大 師 范 曾 及 著 名 文 學 家 劉 再 復 教 授 今 天(星 期 一)主 講 「 香 港 科 技 大 學 傑 出 學 人 講 座 」 ， 以 「 返 回 古 典 ， 返 回 自 然 」 為 題 ， 探 討 藝 術 和 文 學 的 真 善 美 。 范 曾 教 授 表 示 ： 「 回 歸 古 典 ， 回 歸 自 然 」 ， 是 他 對 五 百 年 來 從 西 方 到 東 方 哲 人 們 思 考 的 最 簡 約 的 本 質 的 概 括 。 他 說 ： 「 超 級 大 國 有 囊 括 四 海 之 意 ， 併 吞 八 荒 之 心 。 財 富 操 縱 者 有 永 無 饜 足 的 欲 求 ， 民 族 利 己 主 義 ， 使 國 與 國 之 間 關 係 緊 張 ， 而 廣 大 的 億 萬 人 群 在 物 質 主 義 的 鼓 動 下 ， 奔 走 忙 碌 。 地 球 已 然 變 成 雜 亂 無 章 的 一 捆 亂 麻 ， 人 類 整 體 面 臨 了 靈 魂 自 我 救 贖 的 時 節 ， 這 是 當 下 刻 不 容 緩 的 有 效 措 施 。 否 則 ， 人 類 縱 使 有 天 大 的 本 領 ， 也 無 法 阻 止 地 球 和 人 類 走 向 毀 滅 。 」 他 又 說 ： 「 妄 自 尊 大 是 後 工 業 化 時 代 人 類 的 整 體 惡 德 ， 過 分 誇 張 了 生 產 力 對 地 球 的 改 造 作 用 ， 而 當 代 生 產 力 的 重 要 標 誌 則 是 電 腦 與 資 訊 在 全 世 界 無 遠 弗 屆 的 霸 權 。 它 漸 漸 不 再 馴 服 於 創 造 者 — 人 類 的 意 志 ， 反 過 來 是 對 人 類 全 面 的 專 政 。 我 相 信 在 未 來 的 社 會 ， 國 家 、 制 度 、 信 仰 、 文 化 都 是 不 再 佔 主 導 的 地 位 ， 當 工 具 發 言 超 越 意 志 發 言 的 時 候 ， 那 所 形 成 的 社 會 的 巨 大 盲 動 是 最 可 危 可 懼 的 破 壞 力 。 」

A theoretical physicist at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Professor Che-Ting Chan, was today awarded the prestigious Senior Research Fellowship by the Croucher Foundation in recognition of his achievements in material science. A Chair Professor in the Department of Physics, Prof Chan is a pioneer in the simulation and understanding of material properties. His research team is now working on the theory of a variety of advanced materials, including photonic crystals, metamaterials and nanomaterials. Prof Chan has over 200 publications in reputable journals and several US patents.

The Secretary for Education, the Hon Michael Suen, GBS, JP, joined the senior staff of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Business School in celebrating the recent advancement in the global ranking of its MBA program to No.9. Mr Suen said, “HKUST’s MBA program is an exemplar in attracting the best and brightest from around the world, as the majority of its full-time students come from outside Hong Kong, making up 27 nationalities. I am sure that the remarkable achievements of the Business School will add impetus to Hong Kong’s efforts in enhancing its position as a regional education hub.” Added HKUST President Tony F Chan, “Our Business School’s dazzling achievements are not just the pride of our university, but the pride of Hong Kong.”
