The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) today (12 October 2009) announced a new program of collaborative research and postgraduate training in the humanities and social sciences to create innovative international and interdisciplinary connections among scholars and students researching topics related to China. The multi-year workshop and conference project program, to be organized by HKUST's School of Humanities and Social Science and UCLA's Asia Institute starting 2010, will form the foundation of broader networks of scholars at HKUST, UCLA and beyond who share related research interests. All HKUST and UCLA professorial faculty are eligible to apply and each project should be led by two Principal Investigators (PIs), one from each university.

The international Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) has bestowed the Distinguished Early Career Contributions Award on HKUST Management Professor Riki Takeuchi.  The award is given to an individual who makes important contributions to the science and/or practice of industrial-organizational psychology within seven years of receiving their PhD degree. The SIOP is an international organization based in Ohio, the US and is also a division within the American Psychological Association (est.1892) and an organizational affiliate of the American Psychological Society (est. 1988).  Prof. Takeuchi graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, in December 2003 and since then he has published or has in press 14 high quality papers in top-tier journals. He is the first (principal) author of eight of these papers.

World Class Tests in Mathematics and Problem Solving administered by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have found that students aged 8 to 11 performed particularly well in “logical deduction” type questions. The Tests, conducted in April 2009, also found a significantly higher proportion of students getting distinction in the Mathematics paper compared to those who did the test a year ago. In April 2008, 38% of the students aged 8-11 achieved distinction, while in April 2009 the figure rose to 51%.

The Jessie & George Ho Charitable Foundation has donated HK$ 5 million to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to support its development. The donation will be used to establish the "Commercial Radio 50th Anniversary Scholarship" to support needy students from less affluent regions/cities of Mainland China and nurture other meritorious students of Hong Kong. An unmanned miniature helicopter developed by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has made the world's first autonomous flight to Mount Everest, setting a milestone both in the history of unmanned aviation and in the surveying and protection of high altitude environments. This was part of a series of test flights carried out over a 10-day period in mid June this year by Prof Zexiang Li of HKUST's Electronic and Computer Engineering Department, assisted by his postgraduate student Mr Frank Wang. The flights covered various spots in the Tibetan Highland, including Mount Everest, lakes, a glacier, and a maiden forest. "The biggest challenge of these test flights is the extreme climatic conditions in the high altitudes, particularly the thin air and the exceptionally strong and gusty winds," said Prof Li.

The HKUST has admitted 38% of international students with 39 different citizenships in its 2009 intake of non-local students, the highest record ever. The remaining 62% of the intake of non-local students are from Mainland China, said the Dean of Undergraduate Education at HKUST, Prof Kar Yan Tam. Prof Tam noted that the internationalization of the undergraduate student population is key prong of the university’s on-going internationalization effort and is making an encouraging progress, with overseas student intake rising progressively from 14% in year 2006 to 38% (92 students) this year among the total intake of non-local students. These are all high-caliber students holding diverse overseas qualifications that would easily earn them a place in some of the top-tier universities in North America or Europe, he said, adding that indeed some of these students have given up a place in top universities elsewhere in order to come to Hong Kong.
