科大及內地專家研討 提升RFID基準測試的方法與標準
香 港 科 技 大 學 ( 科 大 ) 今 日 ( 星 期 六 ) 舉 辦 第 一 屆 中 國 無 線 射 頻 識 別 ( RFID ) 基 準 測 試 論 壇 , 主 題 為 「 中 國 無 線 射 頻 識 別 ( RFID ) 基 準 測 試 方 法 與 標 準 的 展 望 」 , 本 港 及 內 地 頂 尖 的 RFID 專 家 , 攜 手 探 討 提 升 RFID 基 準 測 試 的 方 法 與 標 準 。 是 次 論 壇 由 科 大 計 算 機 科 學 及 工 程 學 系 主 辦 , 並 獲 香 港 物 流 及 供 應 鏈 管 理 應 用 技 術 研 發 中 心 全 力 支 持 。 會 上 , 科 大 、 香 港 物 流 及 供 應 鏈 管 理 應 用 技 術 研 發 中 心 以 及 九 個 中 國 內 地 主 要 的 RFID 單 位 , 簽 署 一 份 備 忘 協 議 及 組 成 聯 盟 , 就 如 何 提 升 RFID 基 準 測 試 的 方 法 與 標 準 開 展 長 期 合 作 。 科 大 計 算 機 科 學 及 工 程 學 系 主 任 倪 明 選 教 授 向 傳 媒 講 述 組 成 聯 盟 的 詳 情 及 目 的 , 科 大 計 算 機 科 學 及 工 程 學 系 副 教 授 張 成 志 示 範 RFID 技 術 如 何 應 用 到 科 大 畢 業 袍 的 租 借 管 理 系 統 。 倪 明 選 教 授 表 示 : 「 現 時 內 地 還 沒 有 建 立 一 個 統 一 的 RFID 標 準 , 令 廠 商 需 用 額 外 成 本 去 海 外 尋 找 技 術 。 有 見 及 此 , 科 大 進 行 RFID 基 準 測 試 的 研 究 , 並 促 成 今 日 的 聯 盟 , 聯 合 香 港 與 內 地 的 RFID 專 家 , 探 討 提 升 RFID 基 準 測 試 的 方 法 與 標 準 。 」

HKUST Unveils its 2020 Campus Plan
HKUST today unveiled its ambitious campus development plan at an exhibition starting from today to 31 March 2008 with the theme “Expansion for Excellence: HKUST’s 2020 Campus”. Models of HKUST new campus were prominently on display in the exhibition. The proposed campus expansion is designed to better accommodate the surge in student numbers with the government-initiated four-year degree program by 2012, and to meet the educational and research goals outlined in the University’s Strategic Plan. The exhibition started with a ribbon-cutting ceremony officiated by dignitaries including HKUST Council Chairman Dr John Chan, HKUST Acting President Prof Roland Chin, HKUST Vice-President for Administration and Business Prof Yuk-Shan Wong, HKUST Acting Vice-President for Research and Development Prof Tony Eastham and HKUST Director of Facilities Management Mr Mike Hudson.

HKUST Joins Hands with Finetex to Promote Carbon-Nanofibers Research
Nanotechnology is one of HKUST's the internationally recognized strengths. As part of its strategic partnership with industry, the University today (Tuesday) signed a collaborative agreement with Finetex Technology Global Limited (Finetex), a world-leading manufacturer of nanostructured materials. The agreement will foster collaboration between HKUST and Finetex on a research project for the development and applications of carbon-nanofibers and nanocomposites. With the financial support of Finetex, the FINETEX-HKUST R & D Center begins its existence at HKUST today. The R & D Center will undertake multi-disciplinary research and development of nanofibers and nanocomposites and will in doing so provide technological expertise to Finetex Technology and the industry.

HKUST Picked as Asian Center for World Talent Quest
HKUST is to become the Asian center for a British Government initiative to conduct World Class Tests in mathematics and problem-solving for youngsters from more than 20 countries and regions. Under an agreement signed today (Monday 18 February) with Trumptech (Hong Kong) Limited, HKUST will run a test center in Asia for identifying young talents. Speaking at the contract signing ceremony today, HKUST's Deputy to the President Prof Roland Chin said, "It is our mission to help build a talent pool for Hong Kong and Asia. From as early as 2001, we have been running a full array of programs for the gifted in collaboration with Education Bureau's and the University Grants Committee. "The signing of this contract with Trumptech is a strategic move for the University. It will get us closer to our dream of building Hong Kong into an Asia education hub through identifying and grooming young talents in science and technology."

HKUST Faculty Members Conferred Professional Honours
Once again, HKUST is reaping a harvest of academic honours. This time, two of its faculty members have been elected fellows of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and a third has been made a fellow of SID (Society for Information Display). The only Russian faculty member at HKUST, Associate Professor in Electronic and Computer Engineering V G Chigrinov has been named an SID fellow. Born and educated in Moscow, Prof Chigrinov joined HKUST in 1999 as an Associate Professor. He obtained his PhD degree in Solid State Physics (Liquid Crystals) in the Institute of Crystallography, the USSR Academy of Sciences and was subsequently appointed Chief of Department in Moscow's Organic Intermediates & Dyes Institute (NIOPIK). He was also a Leading Scientist in the Institute of Crystallography, Russian Academy of Sciences.

Long-time HKUST Scholar Takes up Key Post at World Bank
In response to media enquiries regarding former HKUST Prof Justin Lin's appointment to the World Bank, a spokesman for HKUST said that Prof Lin joined the University as a Reader in 1995 and then a Professor of Economics from 1997 while also steering the work of Peking University's China Centre for Economic Research (CCEC). In June 2005, he left HKUST to work full-time for CCEC. During Prof Lin's 10 years of service at HKUST, his research interest included Chinese economy, economic development, agricultural economics and economic history. HKUST President Paul Chu was elated at Prof Lin's remarkable achievement. "We feel great pride that one of our former faculty members has been chosen for this key post to contribute to the improvement of the world's economies."

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology Partners with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to Expand Global Network of Research Collaborations
Hong Kong (February 4, 2008) — A delegation from Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology met with senior administrator and researcher from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) here today as well as to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will establish a long-term research collaboration between the two institutions. His Excellency Ali I. Naimi, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Petroleum and Minerals and Chairman of KAUST's Board of Trustees, led the KAUST delegation, which included Prof Choon Fong Shih, the Founding President-designate of KAUST and currently the President of National University of Singapore (NUS), as well as Mr Nadhmi Al-Nasr, KAUST's Interim President.

NTT DoCoMo VP Shares Insights into Mobile Applications Beyond 3G
Dr Minoru Etoh, Deputy Managing Director of NTT DoCoMo Research Laboratories and Vice President of NTT DoCoMo, a leading mobile communications company in the world, delivered a distinguished lecture today (Friday) on "Insights into Mobile Applications beyond 3G" at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). This was the first lecture given by Dr Etoh at a Hong Kong university. In his lecture, Dr Etoh shared with the audience the current progress of mobile multimedia applications in Japan's broadband cellular environment. He explored the potential expansion of wireless broadband to "fixed-line" internet applications, in addition to the capacity of music download and video clip delivery. Dr Etoh also identified how mobile specific aspects such as mobile multimedia area, mobile advertisement and e-commerce have enriched our daily life and gave his insights into the future development of mobile internet.
