HKUST is hosting Hong Kong’s first Frontiers of Science Symposium jointly sponsored by the Royal Society of Britain and the Croucher Foundation, covering key research areas such as stem cell research and infectious diseases.The conference organizers invited 70 of the best and brightest young scientists from the UK and from local universities for three days (16-18 January) of scientific dialogue and discussions.The Frontiers of Science is an important platform for bilateral sharing of major scientific ideas and techniques between countries, cities or regions. The US and the UK have each organized a series of such bilateral conferences with other countries or regions in recent years.

Two research teams involving HKUST faculty members have won the State Natural Science Award (SNSA), China’s highest honor for achievements in natural science. At the award presentation ceremony today (Tuesday) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the team leaders received their prizes from Chinese leaders Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang. Both teams won the Second Class Prize of the SNSA award. The first award winning team with participation from HKUST’s faculty members was led by Prof Zhang Tongyi, HKUST’s Professor in Mechanical Engineering. Prof Zhang’s team won the prize for their research into the fracture of “Piezoelectric Materials”, which are smart materials that can convert electric energy into mechanical energy. The other team members are Professor Cunfa Gao and Prof Minghao Zhao from the Mainland and Prof Pin Tong, a Professor Emeritus from HKUST.

The Centre for Chinese Medicine R&D (CCM) of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has recently developed an advanced technology to extract effective liposoluble ingredients from traditional Chinese herbal recipe “Xiasangju”(夏桑菊) which has been proved effective in preventing flu virus and avian flu virus from entering body cells. HKUST today (Friday) signed a collaborative agreement with Guangzhou Xing Qun Pharmaceutical Company Limited (XQP), a subordinated enterprise of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Co Ltd (GPC) which is one of the top pharmaceutical giants in Mainland China. The agreement, which formalizes the sale of HKUST’s patented technology to XQP, will foster scientific research collaboration between Guangdong and Hong Kong in combating avian flu and common flu by using Chinese medicine.

Pre-university students with exceptional promise from around the world will be able to flex their intellectual muscles during a 3-week program next summer. Talented Youth Summer Program 2008 (the Program) is co-organized and co-sponsored by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Savantas Policy Institute (Savantas), and will be held from 13 July to 3 August, 2008. Taught by distinguished faculty members and academic experts from HKUST and Stanford University, the Program will carry university credits which could be counted towards future undergraduate studies.

Five Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) professors and their teaching teams were honored today(11 December) with Teaching Innovation Awards for successfully introducing new ideas, techniques and practices in teaching. HKUST President, Prof Paul Chu, presented the awards at the third Teaching and Learning Symposium, a biennial event to promote novel teaching and learning at the University. The five winners are:

The Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR Government, the Honorable Donald Tsang, along with other top officials and prominent community leaders, today joined the HKUST to celebrate the world No.1 ranking for the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program. The Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA Program is a partnership between the HKUST Business School and the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Established a decade ago and well recognized ever since, the program ranks No.1 in the world in this year's Financial Times EMBA global rankings. This is the first time a Hong Kong-based program has topped an international rankings chart.

International library and learning support experts from more than 10 countries attended an International Conference on Information and Learning Commons hosted by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the first of its kind in the territory.The 2-day Conference, started today (Monday 10 December) at HKUST’s Lee Wing Tat Lecture Theatre, was held to mark the anniversary of launching Information Commons by HKUST’s Lee Shau Kee Library.Integrating reference services and technical support, the Information Commons aims to foster continued learning outside the classroom. It provides students and faculty with a creative, flexible, technology-rich environment to use electronic information resources effectively, to experiment with new information technology, and to enhance collaborative learning and group presentations. Library users, especially students, have responded enthusiastically to the service since its introduction last fall.
