Prof. GUO Yike Elected as International Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering
Prof. GUO Yike, Provost and Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been elected as an International Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the Information and Electronics Engineering Division. The CAE is the nation's highest academic institution in engineering sciences and technology, and membership is considered as the highest lifelong academic honor in the field.
Prof. Guo stated, "I am deeply honored to have been elected an International Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and sincerely thanks for this recognition. This distinguished accolade not only affirms my own scientific journey but also celebrates the collective efforts of my team and collaborators. I am also thankful to Hong Kong for the huge stage it gave me to contribute to science. Moving forward, I remain fully committed to pushing the frontiers of data science and artificial intelligence, fostering interdisciplinary and international collaboration, and advancing engineering innovation that benefits society."

A world leading computer scientist, Prof. Guo spent 33 years at the Imperial College London before coming to Hong Kong in 2020. His research focuses on data mining for large-scale scientific applications including distributed data mining methods, machine learning and informatics systems for biology, chemistry, geophysics, healthcare, environment, economy, finance, social media, creative design and security applications. Since his appointment as Provost in December 2022, he has spearheaded the integration of cutting-edge technologies into university curricula and led initiatives to attract global talent.
HKUST’s leadership in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is underscored by its global rankings. The discipline ranks 17th worldwide and 1st in China, reflecting the university's pioneering role in AI innovation. Additionally, HKUST's School of Engineering continues to excel in teaching and research. In the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject, HKUST secured 28th place globally in Computer Science and 33rd in Engineering. The 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject placed the university 29th globally in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and 43rd in Engineering & Technology. All four rankings position HKUST as Hong Kong’s top performer in these fields.
