The “Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)-MTR Joint Research Laboratory” (“Joint Laboratory”) is dedicated to leveraging innovative technology for effective smart traffic management. In one of its research projects, the team utilized artificial intelligence and big data to simulate and predict changes in Hong Kong citizens’ travel patterns under various scenarios, thereby assisting the operations team in implementing appropriate operational plans. This project has won multiple awards at the “Hong Kong ICT Awards 2024”, including the “Smart Mobility (Smart Transport) Gold Award”, “Best Use of AI Award”, “Smart Mobility Grand Award”, and the highest honor, the “Award of the Year”.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its Congregation 2024 today (November 23). The occasion witnessed the conferment of Honorary Doctorates upon four prominent and distinguished leaders by HKUST Pro-Chancellor Dr. John CHAN Cho-Chak, in recognition of their remarkable accomplishments and contributions. Also joining the ceremony included HKUST Council Chairman Prof. Harry SHUM, HKUST President Prof. Nancy IP, and other members of the senior management team. These tiny building blocks of life hold the key to solving some of humanity’s greatest challenges.The recent Molecular Frontiers Symposium at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was a remarkable occasion to ignite curiosity about molecular science. Taking place in the Greater China for the first time from November 15-17, 2024, with the theme “Frontiers of New Knowledge in Science,” the symposium featured an impressive lineup of nearly 40 speakers, including four Nobel laureates Professor Stefan HELL, Sir Tim HUNT, Professor K. Barry SHARPLESS and Sir Gregory WINTER. 

動物一向具癒療心靈的奇妙能量，香港科技大學（科大）今年與非牟利獸醫服務協會（NPV）合作，首度邀得兩隻「治療貓」到訪校園與同學見面互動。牠們是已通過考試及評估的合資格「動物老師」，性格溫馴可愛，具有豐富的「行醫」經驗，為一眾學生帶來歡樂及慰藉，於考試季節前夕稍作放鬆，釋放壓力。 自2019年起，科大推出「毛牽無掛」動物輔助計劃， 該計劃於2022年獲得施熙嘉醫生家庭基金慷慨贊助，持續為科大學生服務。 目前校園有三隻的駐校治療犬， 定期與學生見面，讓學生藉著與治療犬及朋輩互動，緩解壓力，減輕焦慮，每學年惠及逾700名同學，涵蓋各個年級及學科。科大指，未來會繼續開拓各式各樣別具特色的活動，例如邀請不同動物醫生來訪，並舉辦教育講座、義工服務等，務求關心學生的同時，亦提升同學對動物權益的關注。

Prof. Nancy IP, President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), warmly welcomes the "Development Outline for the Hong Kong Park of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone" (the Outline), announced by the HKSAR Government today. She believes the Outline presents a visionary strategic plan for the development of the Hong Kong Park, which will significantly boost Hong Kong's status as an international innovation and technology (I&T) hub.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) participated in the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) Executives’ Meeting at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) from November 11 to 14, 2024. The AUA Executives’ Meeting is held annually with the aims of reviewing the programs, gathering thoughts and discussing the opportunities for future development. Representing HKUST, Dr. Shin Cheul KIM, Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Knowledge Transfer), shared the university’s pioneering efforts in nurturing future leaders with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. He highlighted HKUST’s pioneering work in tech transfer and deep tech incubation that are reshaping higher education.

Multi-sequence knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an advanced non-invasive diagnostic method for knee pathology. However, MRI interpretation is highly time-consuming and heavily dependent on expertise. A research team from the School of Engineering, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has introduced a novel deep learning model which can assist with classifying 12 common types of knee abnormalities, enhancing both efficiency and accuracy. The study was a collaboration between the Smart Lab of HKUST in Hong Kong and the Third Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China. Their innovation was recently published in Nature Communications, in a paper titled “Learning Co-Plane Attention Across MRI Sequences for Diagnosing Twelve Types of Knee Abnormalities”.

The high-level event showcases a lineup of internationally renowned scientists including four Nobel laureates, serving as a dynamic thought-leadership platform for exchanging ideas among brilliant and young minds. Around 40 leading molecular scientists, including Nobel laureates Prof. Stefan HELL, Sir Tim HUNT, Prof. K. Barry SHARPLESS, and Sir Gregory WINTER, will share their knowledge and insights spanning the latest development in genome editing, fluorescence microscopy and protein engineering in this inaugural symposium in Greater China entitled "Frontiers of New Knowledge in Science".
