HKUST Delegation Visits Vietnam to Forge New Partnerships
A delegation from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), led by Vice President for Institutional Advancement Prof. WANG Yang, recently visited Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to promote learning and research opportunities at HKUST.
The delegation met with several senior government officials including the Minister of Planning and Investment Mr. Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of Science and Technology Mr. Huynh Thanh Dat, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Mr. Phan Van Mai, Consul General of China in Ho Chi Minh City Mr. Wei Huaxiang, as well as university leaders at the Vietnam National University (Hanoi), Vietnam National University (Ho Chi Minh City), Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and others to explore potential collaborations in areas like artificial intelligence, smart cities, and digital economy.

Preference for naturally talented over hard workers emerges in childhood, HKUST researchers find
Researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have found that children think more highly of the naturally talented over hard workers, a preference that they carry into adulthood.
That is the case even in China, a culture that places effort above natural talent as people perceive the naturally talented as being more competent than those who work hard, according to the study.
Although children’s preference for naturals also generalizes to the perception of their friendliness and a willingness to interact with them, Chinese adults do not prefer naturals over hard workers except when considering competence, the study found.

HKUST Breakthrough Identifies Rare Tumor Cell “Spies”
Researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) developed a novel technology which allows genomic DNA and RNA sequencing to be carried out simultaneously in single cells of both frozen and fresh tissues, and identified rare brain tumor cell "spies" disguised as normal cells with this method. This breakthrough facilitates cancer research for some of the most complex and rare tumors, opening new directions for drug target discovery in the future.

Melodies of Spring Bring Warmth and Joy to HKUST Community
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) presented the awe-inspiring Spring Concert “Where Imagination Blooms,” held at Shaw Auditorium on January 31. Over 600 music lovers enjoyed a night of stunning music accompanied by the orchestra under the baton of the First Associate Concertmaster of Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra Mr. LEUNG Kin Fung, with performers including award-winning operatic duo Mr. CHEN Chen and Ms. Louise KWONG, Second Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra Mr. WANG Liang, pianist Mr. HUANG Naiwei, alumni artist Mr. LAM Kwok Ho, and postgraduate student Ms. LU Xiaoyue. A surprise performance by the legendary Master LIU Shikun, an internationally renowned Chinese piano maestro, brought a delightful end to the evening.

HKUST Joins Forces with Cornell University to Advance Research and Education
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) signed the ‘HKUST-Cornell Cooperation Agreement’ with Cornell University to collaborate on teaching, training, and cutting-edge research on February 9.
Leveraging the expertise of both universities, the two forward-thinking partners will work together to explore new opportunities for joint activities and strengthen academic exchange and research collaborations across disciplines. Highlighting the common goals to address global issues, " There are many big areas we can collaborate on, such as sustainability, new energy and aging society." said HKUST Provost Prof. GUO Yike.
