And they can show me a little bit more about Hong Kong so that when I go back to Germany next year I can bring back some of the Hong Kong culture back to my home country.” our undergraduate Wons Julius Constantin said.

Experience “Be Our Guest”
Eager to play a part in helping HKUST’s local and overseas students cross cultural barriers and get to know each other better, a group of Year 3 business students launched the “Be Our Guest” dinner hosting program, an initiative which won them the President’s 1-HKUST Student Life Award.
If you want to break the ice between local and overseas students and learn more about each other’s cultures, what better way to do it than by sharing food together? Better still, why not make it a truly authentic experience by hosting the meal at a student’s own home, round a big table Chinese-style?
This was the thought that struck Jason Yuen after he joined the Exchange Buddy programme in Year 1 at HKUST and decided to invite two German and Russian students home for dinner. “There were lots of funny moments, but overall it worked very well,” he recalls. “I wondered whether we could make it into a regular program”.

Getting a Head Start to Her Dreams
One of the first HKUST students to join the HeadStart@HKUST Program, which combines Internship, Mentorship and Fellowship, Beatrice Chan spent her internship last summer with Taiwan Public Television Service and found it gave new impetus to her personal dreams.
Assigned to the production team of Taiwan Outlook, a talk show that gives Chinese communities worldwide latest insights into the political, economic and cultural environment in Taiwan, Beatrice was given the responsibility of producing her own 50-minute episode – despite having no previous experience of the TV industry. “I had to do my own background research, decide who I wanted to interview, prepare my own questions and even help with the post-production afterwards. It was a huge challenge for me as I’m not a journalism major, so was not even sure of the best way to ask questions.”
