服务大学满二十年的资深教职员聚首一堂庆祝。 第五届教职员长期服务奖颁奖典礼于二月举行。240名服务大学满二十年的资深教职员聚首一堂，与家人、朋友一起庆祝并获嘉许。科大校长与大学高层管理人员亦参与典礼，表扬各大学成员坚守岗位、尽心服务。得奖者包括各学科教授、行政人员、语文教师、安全主任、技术员及其他负责大学日常运作的职员。 忠诚服务 团结一志 得奖者于1994年加入当时成立只有三年的科大。校长陈繁昌教授表扬教职员在创校日子努力不懈，成功帮助大学在短短二十三年跻身成为国际级研究型大学。陈校 长感谢各得奖者尽忠职守，令大学取得现时卓越的成就。在二十多年间，科大的研究已获得国际认可。现时，全球五大洲多达八十多个国家的学生在科大就读。而大 学更连续三年获《QS亚洲大学排名》列为亚洲第一。 多元化的工作机会 在芸芸得奖者当中，包括健康、安全及环境处高级经理、教职员协会主席李志满博士以及蒙民伟博士纳米科学教授、物理学系讲座教授沈平。李博士十分享受科大多元 化的职务。他举例说在同一天，他会向学生示范使用灭火器、负责与建筑公司职员讨论地盘安全措施和教导老师如何安全使用各个实验室。 沈平教授是最早加入科大的研究员之一。他认为科大的工作十分充实。沈平教授早年与其他研究员成功研制出直径仅0.4纳米的纳米碳管，是迄今世界上最细的单壁纳米碳管。其后，沈教授研发出一种具隔音功能的原创超材料，与物理学系其他教授成为2013年度Brillouin奖章的得奖者。 首席副校长史维教授、副校长(研发及研究生教育)李行伟教授、副校长（行政）黄玉山教授、副校长（大学拓展）翁以登博士一同出席颁奖典礼。大学更特别邀请得奖者家人及亲友前来一起分享喜悦，欢聚一堂。

What an achievement! In 2012, HKUST will have the highest number of newly elected Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) among universities and institutions in Asia . It will also bring the HKUST Engineering School 's total number of IEEE Fellows to 25. The IEEE is the world's leading professional association for advancing technology for humanity and has 395,000 members in more than 160 countries. Fellowship is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as an honor only given to a select group of members with extraordinary accomplishments in their fields. The six newly elevated professors from the HKUST School of Engineering are: Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering Prof Oscar Au , cited for his contributions to multimedia coding and security.

Be proud. Be very proud. HKUST’s world top-ranked* Executive MBA (EMBA), jointly run with Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, continues to go from strength to strength. We have been in the top three since 2005 and No.1 globally since 2009. What is fueling this success? More high-powered applicants want to learn about Asia as the importance of the region continues to rise within the global economy and greater knowledge of China becomes a must for those at the top.  And we are able to attract the best from around the globe as the leading program of its kind in the world.

Prof Nancy Ip, Dean of Science and Chair Professor of the Division of Life Science, discusses what drives her on in her stellar international research career in neuroscience at HKUST. Editor: You were born and educated in Hong Kong and then went to the US for higher education. What brought you back to Hong Kong? Prof Ip: I joined HKUST in 1993 when the University was still in its very early stages. I had received my PhD in pharmacology from Harvard University, and worked in the biotechnology industry in New York. I was attracted by HKUST's vision and wanted to contribute what I had learned to train the next generation of scientists in Hong Kong. Editor: As Hong Kong’s first specifically research-oriented university, what do think HKUST has achieved?

There was something for all connected with HKUST to smile about at the recent 2011 Young Scientists Awards organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Science. Our doctoral students swept ALL the top honors in the annual contest. Chen Jiefei, Department of Physics, received her award in the Physical/Mathematical Science category for a study reaffirming Einstein's theory that nothing travels faster than light in a vacuum. The winners of the Life Science category were Alan Wong Siu-lun and Wu Lin, Division of Life Sciences, for enhancing understanding of Parkinson's disease and deaf-blindness respectively. These three were joined by Li Dong, Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, who was awarded the main accolade in the Engineering Science category for advancing optical microscopy technology, a driver of major developments in biological science and medicine.

香 港 科 技 大 学 （ 科 大 ） 理 学 院 物 理 学 系 博 士 研 究 生 王 琳 近 月 获 颁 中 国 青 少 年 科 技 创 新 奖 ， 表 扬 她 在 创 新 科 技 方 面 的 突 出 表 现 ﹔ 王 琳 亦 为 今 年 本 港 唯 一 年 青 科 研 人 员 获 欧 洲 材 料 学 会 颁 发 青 年 科 学 家 奖 ， 以 肯 定 她 在 石 墨 烯 二 维 晶 体 结 构 研 究 、 以 及 分 析 各 类 杂 质 缺 陷 对 石 墨 烯 特 性 的 调 制 和 物 理 机 理 方 面 取 得 突 破 性 的 成 就 。 中 国 青 少 年 科 技 创 新 奖 于 2004 年 邓 小 平 诞 辰 100 周 年 时 成 立 ， 每 年 颁 奖 予 大 学 生 和 中 小 学 生 ， 表 扬 他 们 在 科 技 创 新 活 动 中 表 现 突 出 和 勇 于 创 新 的 精 神 。 而 欧 洲 材 料 学 会 于 1983 年 成 立 ， 在 材 料 研 究 领 域 享 誉 国 际 。 在 该 会 统 筹 下 ， 每 年 均 由 多 位 国 际 权 威 科 学 家 评 选 出 在 材 料 科 学 和 技 术 领 域 表 现 出 色 和 具 有 潜 质 的 青 年 学 者。

"2011 was a great year in the HKUST story. Not only did the University celebrate its 20th Anniversary since courses first began in 1991, HKUST also became the No.1 ranked university in Asia . That's right! Just two decades after it was founded, the University was named the leading School in the region in the reputable Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings. The previous year, we were ranked second.
