The best way to predict the future is to create it
In HKUST, many of our students spent a term or more overseas through exchange or internship program, nevertheless, India may not be a popular choice for most students but Homan Yueng, student of Mathematics and Economics chose and got the most out of it. Can you briefly describe your working holiday experience, and what attracted you to do something different?
I spent 9 months working as a Business Development Executive in a software product company in Hyderabad, India. My key responsibility was to expand our business into the Greater China Region.

T&M-DDP Students invented Smart Baby Diet Tracker
Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management (T&M-DDP) students Juliana Ko and Raymond Tam together with Ambi Yuen, MPhil student in Electronic and Computer Engineering, jointly invented a smart baby diet tracker to keep track of baby feeding and won many design and start-up competitions.

Engineer Loves Music
How would you choose between music and computers? Chuck-jee Chau, PhD student of Computer Science and Engineering is smart enough to combine two by carrying out research on the synthesis and analysis of sound. As always, cross-curricular study is encouraged in UST to enrich our educational experience and broaden our minds.

I decided to do my PhD at HKUST because Prof Andrew Horner, the only computer music researcher in Hong Kong, is based here at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Exploring computer software and hardware was my hobby since primary school, and while I was at secondary school I started developing websites and programs.

香港科技大學HeadStart卓越領先計劃 透過早期職場體驗及職業發展指導 提升新生競爭力
香港科技大學(科大)首屆HeadStart卓越領先計劃透過早期職場體驗及職業發展指導計劃,旨在給予一、二年級的本科生在日趨國際化、競爭激烈及瞬息萬變的社會中一個「領先優勢」。
由科大校董會成員梁嘉彰女士、廖家俊教授及人文學部人文教育助理教授邵梅儀發起,HeadStart卓越領先計劃於今年2月啟動。有別於一般實習計劃,HeadStart卓越領先計劃包含3個部分,包括實習、師友及夥伴,為學生提供一個全方位的體驗及職場訓練。
邵教授表示:「計劃的誕生源於創辦人一個簡單的願望,就是希望香港年輕新一代能展望將來,有一個不同的願景。我們希望他們能學習盼望,相信他們的未來取決於自己,透過努力及堅定的信念,年輕人可以追隨自己的心及熱誠,他們亦可以成為具影響力的領袖,將我們的社會以至世界建設成更美好的地方。」
計劃的主要活動包括工作坊和關於提高職場意識的人際關係技巧的培訓、與行政人員會面、公司考察、行政人員輔導和指導以及拓展人際網絡。透過這些活動,學生不但更早得到關於職業意見、而且因而變得自信,更有能力與職場接軌。與此同時,亦令不同學系的同學聯繫起來,增進友誼。
56名來自理學院、工學院、工商管理學院、人文社會科學院及跨學科課程事務處的學生獲機會到24間本地及國際企業實習。本地生佔六成一,內地生佔一成,而來自日本、新加坡、台灣、美國及其他國家及地區的非本地生則佔二成九。提供實習機會的企業業務包括零售、投資銀行、科技、地產發展、媒體以及創意工業等。

Gold Performance
There is much more than academic achievement for a fruitful University life. We believe taking part in sports, music and art help students to boost active learning and living. The story of Raymond Sumitra Lukman set a good example of making a balance between chasing his swimming dream and pursuing study or even career.
Raymond Sumitra Lukman from Indonesia is a true champion – the Year 1 School of Science undergraduate recently won HKUST sports team’s first gold medal at the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong (USFHK) annual aquatic meet for 21 years. Let’s find out more about his swimming achievements and his life at the University.
When did you start swimming competitively, and what is your specialist event?
Raymond: I started competitively in 3rd grade and joined a swimming club. My event is butterfly, but I also do freestyle; I’m a sprinter – 50m or 100m.
