服務大學滿二十年的資深教職員聚首一堂慶祝。 第五屆教職員長期服務獎頒獎典禮於二月舉行。240名服務大學滿二十年的資深教職員聚首一堂，與家人、朋友一起慶祝並獲嘉許。科大校長與大學高層管理人員亦參與典禮，表揚各大學成員堅守崗位、盡心服務。得獎者包括各學科教授、行政人員、語文教師、安全主任、技術員及其他負責大學日常運作的職員。 忠誠服務 團結一志 得獎者於1994年加入當時成立只有三年的科大。校長陳繁昌教授表揚教職員在創校日子努力不懈，成功幫助大學在短短二十三年躋身成為國際級研究型大學。陳校 長感謝各得獎者盡忠職守，令大學取得現時卓越的成就。在二十多年間，科大的研究已獲得國際認可。現時，全球五大洲多達八十多個國家的學生在科大就讀。而大 學更連續三年獲《QS亞洲大學排名》列為亞洲第一。 多元化的工作機會 在芸芸得獎者當中，包括健康、安全及環境處高級經理、教職員協會主席李志滿博士以及蒙民偉博士納米科學教授、物理學系講座教授沈平。李博士十分享受科大多元化的職務。他舉例說在同一天，他會向學生示範使用滅火器、負責與建築公司職員討論地盤安全措施和教導老師如何安全使用各個實驗室。 沈平教授是最早加入科大的研究員之一。他認為科大的工作十分充實。沈平教授早年與其他研究員成功研製出直徑僅0.4納米的納米碳管，是迄今世界上最細的單壁納米碳管。其後，沈教授研發出一種具隔音功能的原創超材料，與物理學系其他教授成為2013年度Brillouin獎章的得獎者。 首席副校長史維教授、副校長(研發及研究生教育)李行偉教授、副校長（行政）黃玉山教授、副校長（大學拓展）翁以登博士一同出席頒獎典禮。大學更特別邀請得獎者家人及親友前來一起分享喜悅，歡聚一堂。

What an achievement! In 2012, HKUST will have the highest number of newly elected Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) among universities and institutions in Asia . It will also bring the HKUST Engineering School 's total number of IEEE Fellows to 25. The IEEE is the world's leading professional association for advancing technology for humanity and has 395,000 members in more than 160 countries. Fellowship is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as an honor only given to a select group of members with extraordinary accomplishments in their fields. The six newly elevated professors from the HKUST School of Engineering are: Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering Prof Oscar Au , cited for his contributions to multimedia coding and security.

Be proud. Be very proud. HKUST’s world top-ranked* Executive MBA (EMBA), jointly run with Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, continues to go from strength to strength. We have been in the top three since 2005 and No.1 globally since 2009. What is fueling this success? More high-powered applicants want to learn about Asia as the importance of the region continues to rise within the global economy and greater knowledge of China becomes a must for those at the top.  And we are able to attract the best from around the globe as the leading program of its kind in the world.

Prof Nancy Ip, Dean of Science and Chair Professor of the Division of Life Science, discusses what drives her on in her stellar international research career in neuroscience at HKUST. Editor: You were born and educated in Hong Kong and then went to the US for higher education. What brought you back to Hong Kong? Prof Ip: I joined HKUST in 1993 when the University was still in its very early stages. I had received my PhD in pharmacology from Harvard University, and worked in the biotechnology industry in New York. I was attracted by HKUST's vision and wanted to contribute what I had learned to train the next generation of scientists in Hong Kong. Editor: As Hong Kong’s first specifically research-oriented university, what do think HKUST has achieved?

There was something for all connected with HKUST to smile about at the recent 2011 Young Scientists Awards organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Science. Our doctoral students swept ALL the top honors in the annual contest. Chen Jiefei, Department of Physics, received her award in the Physical/Mathematical Science category for a study reaffirming Einstein's theory that nothing travels faster than light in a vacuum. The winners of the Life Science category were Alan Wong Siu-lun and Wu Lin, Division of Life Sciences, for enhancing understanding of Parkinson's disease and deaf-blindness respectively. These three were joined by Li Dong, Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, who was awarded the main accolade in the Engineering Science category for advancing optical microscopy technology, a driver of major developments in biological science and medicine.

香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 理 學 院 物 理 學 系 博 士 研 究 生 王 琳 近 月 獲 頒 中 國 青 少 年 科 技 創 新 獎 ， 表 揚 她 在 創 新 科 技 方 面 的 突 出 表 現 ﹔ 王 琳 亦 為 今 年 本 港 唯 一 年 青 科 研 人 員 獲 歐 洲 材 料 學 會 頒 發 青 年 科 學 家 獎 ， 以 肯 定 她 在 石 墨 烯 二 維 晶 體 結 構 研 究 、 以 及 分 析 各 類 雜 質 缺 陷 對 石 墨 烯 特 性 的 調 製 和 物 理 機 理 方 面 取 得 突 破 性 的 成 就 。 中 國 青 少 年 科 技 創 新 獎 於 2004 年 鄧 小 平 誕 辰 100 周 年 時 成 立 ， 每 年 頒 獎 予 大 學 生 和 中 小 學 生 ， 表 揚 他 們 在 科 技 創 新 活 動 中 表 現 突 出 和 勇 於 創 新 的 精 神 。 而 歐 洲 材 料 學 會 於 1983 年 成 立 ， 在 材 料 研 究 領 域 享 譽 國 際 。 在 該 會 統 籌 下 ， 每 年 均 由 多 位 國 際 權 威 科 學 家 評 選 出 在 材 料 科 學 和 技 術 領 域 表 現 出 色 和 具 有 潛 質 的 青 年 學 者。

"2011 was a great year in the HKUST story. Not only did the University celebrate its 20th Anniversary since courses first began in 1991, HKUST also became the No.1 ranked university in Asia . That's right! Just two decades after it was founded, the University was named the leading School in the region in the reputable Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings. The previous year, we were ranked second.

香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 數 學 系 何 旭 華 副 教 授 在 台 北 舉 行 的 世 界 華 人 數 學 家 大 會 開 幕 禮 上 獲 頒 晨 興 數 學 金 獎 ， 是 今 年 唯 一 一 位 香 港 院 校 的 教 授 膺 此 殊 榮 。 世 界 華 人 數 學 家 大 會 每 三 年 舉 行 一 次 ， 而 一 九 九 八 年 設 立 的 晨 興 數 學 金 獎 ， 表 彰 45 歲 或 以 下 在 基 礎 數 學 和 應 用 數 學 取 得 傑 出 成 就 的 華 人 數 學 家 。 世 界 華 人 數 學 家 大 會 及 晨 興 數 學 獎 是 參 考 歷 史 悠 久 、 每 四 年 舉 行 一 次 的 國 際 數 學 家 大 會 及 被 譽 為 數 學 界 諾 貝 爾 獎 的 菲 爾 茲 獎 。 晨 興 數 學 金 獎 肯 定 何 旭 華 教 授 對 數 學 領 域 中 「 志 村 簇 」 （ Shimura varieties ） 相 關 的 代 數 及 數 論 研 究 ， 有 關 範 疇 後 來 發 展 成 為 幾 何 學 ， 即 以 高 維 去 確 定 數 學 結 構 中 的 參 數 。 志 村 簇 較 早 期 的 用 途 包 括 ， 1994 年 英 國 著 名 數 學 家 安 德 魯 懷 爾 斯 （ Andrew Wiles ） 教 授 因 而 證 實 了 358 年 未 能 解 決 的 費 馬 （ Fermat ） 最 後 定 理 ， 震 驚 數 學 界 。 何 教 授 運 用 志 村 簇 ， 成 功 解 決 幾 何 學 領 域 內 仿 射 Deligne-Lusztig 群 組 中 ， 數 十 年 以 來 懸 而 未 決 的 課 題 ， 因 而 獲 嘉 許 。
