HKUST Wins Grand Environmental Award for Waste Separation

2010-08-22

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was presented a Special Grand Award for Cooperative Partnership by the Environmental Protection Department under its Source Separation of Commercial and Industrial Waste Scheme. HKUST is one of only three institutions in Hong Kong to win this award.

At the award presentation ceremony, HKUST Vice President for Administration and Business Prof YS Wong said, “We are delighted that our commitment to protecting the environment by source separation of waste has gained recognition. This is only one of our numerous initiatives to make our world a better place to live in for our younger generations. As a responsible corporate citizen, we will continue to step up our effort to achieve sustainability.”

The Source Separation Programme for Commercial and Industrial Waste was launched by the Environmental Protection Department in 2007 to encourage waste recovery and recycling in the work place. HKUST received the award as a “model member” in 2009 after fulfilling all the requirements of the program. This year the University did even better and wins the Grand Award.

Throughout the years, HKUST has been implementing various measures to protect the environment. These include pollution prevention, resource conservation, energy reduction, waste minimization, as well as environmental education. On the waste management front, the University collected over 131,000 kg of waste paper, over 3,700 kg of plastic bottles and over 14,000 printer cartridges in 2009. Other waste items collected include fluorescent tubes and used lamps, rechargeable batteries, used CDs, chemical reagents, and food wastes.
